More water evaporates when it's warmer. What goes up must come down.

Yeah, I guess the meme was oceans rising. When it's oceans falling that's turning out to be the real problem.
They have done quite extensive water removal projects where I live. For months a road was up putting in new massive drains. Newmarket had large projects maybe 10 years ago. I assume other places too.

I got an Intel i5-11400F - this thing is fantastic!
Workload is a PostgreSQL database, so my benchmark is an account invoice report over a 1.3M row table with various joins and calculations with other tables. Results: AMD EPYC 7601 (cloud server, 16 allocated threads, 32GB RAM): 22.5 seconds AMD Ryzen 2600 (6core/12 thread, 16GB RAM) : 12.1 seconds AMD Ryzen 3100 (4core/8 thread, 16GB RAM): 10.0 seconds Intel 11400F (6core/12 thread, 16GB RAM): 7.6 seconds PostgreSQL isn't doing much in parallel queries (max 2), so it's more of a single thread test than a summed test of all the cores - a lot of the time is a final sort of the table, which I don't think is parallelized. I tried 3200MHz RAM vs 2400MHz RAM but it makes very little difference in this test on either Ryzen or Intel - ~0.1second difference for both cases. That's about 1% in reality for what looks like 20-25% on paper. It's not just a case of one CPU family is "better" than the other, it really depends on what you're intending to use it for: the Ryzens still beat the Intel significantly doing xmrig (Monero hashing), and time to calculate the DAG for ETH mining. Easily 30% faster for these things, even the older 2600 - but as far as bang for buck, this Intel is pretty fucking good, and is great for my PostgreSQL stuff. CPU was $259, total system build was ~$700 (no GPU, I use it headless). I very much doubt that a more expensive 11th Gen would reduce my execution time significantly - at least not enough to justify a 'twice the price' CPU.

This uproar over TVNZ playing ads during the moment of silence is pretty lolz.
Nothing in the media yet, it'll be interesting to see who breaks rank first, it'll be pretty sus if it just gets ignored.

Random wild prediction:
Next-gen alternative to the Olympics. Instead of all these dominant super-sports, it will be a display of all the kinds of niche activities people get into and hone to a high degree. Held around the world simultaneously, rather than spotlighting a nation.

Exactly. Stuff everyone has heard about, had some experience with.
As opposed to say, Mid-West Freestyle Canoeing.

To put that race in some context, Warholm's time for the 400m hurdles is faster than the NZ national record for the 400m flat.

Does that come at such a cost that you lose common sense?

Yeah, absolutely. Some people live these laser focused lives, something our society facilitates. Most needs can be filled my simple virtue of abundant cash, with only the most rudimentary of social mores.
So, yeah people absolutely can and do live in these hyper-bubbles where the only sense they need is that which affords them cash. It's basically the premise of American Psycho. What's fascinating is it's really hard to catch people outside of their bubbles, especially when they're so tight, so it's infrequent we actually experience this apparent stark lack of sense.

Was introduced to a guy the other day, cousin of a wife of a friend, seemed normal at first but after 15, 20 minutes of innocuous conversation things went from "glad we're out of lockdown" to "the Jews are behind it, they murdered Christ and want to depopulate the world" in the blink of an eye. My head was spinning, I literally did not know how to deal with it. He was dead serious and he couldn't believe how I could not see the self-evident truth of what he was saying.
