Labour last week:

"NOBODY WANTS TAX CUTS CHRIS LUXON IS ONLY PANDERING TO HIS RICH MATES"

Then:

Quote:
1news poll.

Party support

National: 39% (up 7 percentage points)

Labour: 37% (down 3pp)
Nek minit:

Government cuts 25c a litre off fuel excise in cost of living relief package

Note: it's not a tax cut, it's a "cost of living relief package"

While it probably is a political response it's not contradicting as if we're talking about some (minor) relief for those struggling then there is a difference between a short term fuel tax reduction and income tax cuts.

...because you can't tax a tax - oh look, now it's 29c with GST off too!

It's only temporary as well (3 months), then it gets reviewed. It's not permanent at this stage.

Aussie suggests this isn't THAT great an idea, given the craptacular system they've got.

More leading Ministry of Health officials resign

The test for Labour here is what skill set will they opt for: Competence at running a health ministry? Or polishing a turd?

Bloomfield was pretty good at both, but it's pretty rare and usually a trade-off.

And another one this morning, but to be fair, they'll all be out of jobs in a few months when the new super DHB scheme comes into play.

Given the govt stopped following their advice, I can't say I'd blame them for feeling like a change in role

Supported Cullen once upon a time, not Robertson. Which is strange that the grudge sticks considering the same sex marriage bill she promoted. Rainbow Labour must have many colours.

Tell me Louisa Wall is tremendously unpopular without telling me she’s tremendously unpopular

Quote:

Arena Williams, the Labour MP who did win the Manurewa seat, attended Wall’s final speech but did not join other MPs in personally wishing her farewell. She spent most of the speech looking down, towards her phone.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, both Māori Party co-leaders, and National leader Christopher Luxon were among the minority of MPs who did not attend Wall’s valedictory statement in person.

Hmmm... I wonder what's going on there? Something to keep an eye out for in 20 years or so as memoirs and such come out. Unless I guess it comes out sooner.

You'd hope so. The long anticipated wave of shit and misery is here, peaked by a fucking pandemic. Labour is going to need someone who is sharp on their feet if they're going to come out clean.

Well, really, they should anticipate getting fucked, TBH. There should be a cold sweat going around those halls.

So can Hipkins do it?

It seems like we've settled into the normal phase of virus exasperated misery, so I guess eyes can come off the pandemic?

I guess he is the right face for the job. He needs to come up with some growl tho if he wants to appease the voters National's appealing to right now.

Yeah, he probably has more than a clue. Getting out now is the smart money, before the shit really starts flying, if the warm-up is anything to go by. And there hasn't been a better time to set up a work-from-home situation.

NGL, I read that as tolkienistic, and was reading the article expecting them to discuss using te reo only to refer to different groups of people, ancient artifacts, people of significance, or various sets of rings.

Kiri Allan is useless and all that language bollocks is just wokeness theatre on the side. I actually am more concerned that Kris Faafoi is deciding he'd rather not be an MP at all. I didn't always like the policies that he was charged with implementing but he's smart, well-liked, and competent. IDGI.

This would be real change:

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/pol...n-nz-elections

It's crazy how much money is brought in by individual donations, each member of entire families making the maximum donation.

It would help fend off the style of politics that's coming out of the US, that's for sure.

Not really a Labour thing tho, this is an electorate thing. Anyone with the votes to stay in power would be singing the same "climate change is bad, the economy is worse" tune.

She doesn't have the votes to stay in power. She's toast at the next election, if she doesn't get knifed by a rival before then like she knifed Angry Andy.

But I take your point. Principles go out the window when the economy looks as fucked as NZs does.
