Yep, that's why I referred to the character as Greek :P

He was lame.

No worries - I've flipped out at least once that I can remember, followed by /forehead slap once I'd figured it out

Amazon's monthly specials are out for October and so I've nabbed a very cheap copy of The Sisters Brothers, which has been on my wish list for ages.

Today was a good day for buying new books, it seems!

Had some pretty good books off Amazon for cheap/free, but I've had a LOT more shit ones; Tend to avoid unless it's a known author now.

(Well, put it this way: I'm not going to bother watching it again; Keep the childhood appreciation of it pristine)

Been on a Robert A Heinlein kick, read Stranger in a Strange Land, Have Space Suit Will Travel and am reading The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. Loved the first, loving the latest, middle was okay!

yeah - true, but I've had a few good ones. Although I note most books seem to be Book 1 of x in the series y... so it's like the old shareware model for software by Apogee....

I've just started Captain Vorpatril's Alliance; as you'd expect from Bujold it's superb. I've gone the ARC route since I don't need a proofed version.

Joseph Anton - Salman Rushdie (his memoir). Yes THAT Salman Rushdie. Padma Lakshmi's ex husband. You lucky old coot.

Oh he wrote this and that book as well, pissed off a bunch of people etc. Not worth mentioning in the same sentence as Padma Lakshmi.

I love Baen for this. I'm more than happy to pay more than double the final retail price for a book from an author I adore so I can read it months in advance. And yes, this is a fantastic book!

Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill is another on my wish list which has made it to the $1.99 October specials. Making out like a bandit here, with my holiday reading now stacking up nicely.

Pretty good so far. 5 in the series so it should keep me going for a while.

If you're after some space opera, Leviathan Wakes has been recommended to me by a crap tonne of people and what I've read so far it's fantastic and down to $1.99USD everywhere.

Wool by Hugh Howey is the Kindle Daily Deal today and at $1.99USD it's a damn steal. Finished it while in the USA last month and it was well worth the $7 or so I paid.

Showing as " Not currently available" for me. Maybe some region restrictions? Is your account a standard NZ account?

Reading "Killing is Harmless" - pretty good, haven't played the game as it got pretty average reviews, may have to rent it out though.

Just finished the new Peter Hamilton - great north road, entertaining enough but so little depth for a 1000page plus brick.

Reading hydrogen sonata by Iain M Banks now.

On Book 5 now. Good series, pretty light thematically but plenty of action.

Zombie Survival Guide.

Boring. Author trying to be too funny. Almost every paragraph starts with a sentence like "You'd think that using <weapon> would keep you safe and be very effective against <nameforzombies>, BUT YOU ARE WRONG!"

It's like reading a never ending 'Not' joke.

Rereading my way through the Discworld. Loving it. I'd forgotten what an ignominious introduction one of my favourite characters had;
"drunken Captain Vimes of the Night Watch staggered slowly down the street, folded gently into the gutter outside the Watch House and lay there"

#1 is the best in the series IMO, though the whole is tied together quite well.

Yeah his books always have one chapter long hard-core sex scene thrown in there - in his newish fantasy series it's gay sex, which I think he did just to freak out his readers.

The Sisters Brothers is a Western I'd had on my Amazon list for awhile and finally it had a price drop last month. Great book, incredibly violent but punctuated with a number of poignant moments that turned it from a dime-store action story to something much more meaningful.

I'm currently reading Joe Abercrombie's Red Country which finally had it's US release. Formatting issues aside, it's coincidentally another Western, just this time set in a fantasy world. Only 30% through but it's fully enjoyable so far.

I'm saving Caliban's War, the sequel to Leviathan Wakes for the beach in a few weeks time.

yeah - I had 3 people at work strongly recommend Altered Carbon, but only lightly suggest the other two.... I'll just see how it goes.
