Gay marriage gets PM's full support

Quote:
Prime Minister John Key says he'll vote in favour a bill to allow marriage equality for same-sex couples because it won't impact on his relationship with his wife.

Mr Key said on Radio Live he would use a conscience vote to vote in favour of a bill allowing gay and transgender couples to get married.

He signalled his support for the bill in its early stages, but said he was unlikely to change his mind over the course of the debate to allow same-sex couples to marry - given it was a conscience vote.

"You go through all the merits of the argument and look at what people put up; but my view is that if two gay people want to get married I can't see why it would undermine my marriage with Bronagh," he told Radio Live.

No, not by the leadership. But he will get an ear-bashing from the rainbow faction.

I thought that the issue is more him publicly speaking out against the bill (even though it's a conscious vote) without party approval.

I mean if it is about "bigotry" then it looks like Key is gonna have a shit load of censuring to do come vote time.

Not sure if I read that right, do you think Su'a William Sio made that anti gay comment to promote himself in the Mangere electorate? o_O

Surely not?

Imo it seems as that is what Su'a was doing. Which is pretty stupid because a) Labour owns that electorate and b) from the research I've seen Maori/Pacific people are more for same sex marriage than the general population.

My point was against the underlying sentiment as expressed by that idiot. "OMFG THIS MIGHT BE A VOTE LOSER, LET'S JUST DROP THIS!". To an extent, politicians must be populist but when it comes to people's fundamental right to be treated with dignity and respect, I do not find anyone holding the attitude that such a fundamental right should be sold out for the sake of political expedience to be, well, sufferable.

Aye.

Shame on every nay vote, IMHO.

Speaking to the majority, and I'm glad that it is a majority: good on you all. Go NZ. Australia has a female unmarried atheist PM and she won't even put it to a vote.

I'm thrilled to be able to report that Macindoe is actually my electorate MP. His stand on marriage equality really makes me want to vote for him next time around. But it gets better: Labour's candidate in that electorate is Sue "sack of hammers" Moroney. The next two highest-profile candidates are from the Winston Peters and Colin Craig parties.

Rock, hard place, rockier harder place.

Last night, Labour's Raymond Huo was the only MP not to vote on the historic Marriage (Definition of Marriage) Amendment Bill. So why didn't he? The Herald has an answer:

Labour MP Raymond Huo, who had earlier said he was leaning towards supporting the bill, did not cast a vote because he felt the Chinese community was overwhelmingly opposed to it.

Mr Huo said he would review his decision at the select committee stage.

So, his constituency was overwhelmingly opposed, so he didn't vote. He didn't represent them, and he didn't represent his conscience and Labour values, which were presumably telling him to vote the other way. Instead, he just sat there and twiddled his thumbs on the most important issue to come before our Parliament this term.

Aren't you glad we're paying him $140,000 a year?
