He's a fucking legend but there is no place for such a promising lad in the Crusaders when Carter comes back and the only NZ team that doesn't have an excellent number 10 at the moment is the Chiefs. So, bye bye Stephen Donald next year and welcome Stephen Brett!
I was tossing up between Brett and Gear for 1st try scorer on Saturday. I picked Gear. Brett got it. He was paying $20. *groan*. Would have made $100...........

Auckland's 1st five situation still isn't great. I like Isa ... but more as a full back. He's fine in 1st 5 - but not great.

That would be the walking blowout Jimmy Gopperth.
We'll take him please. |

Simon : Agreed
Blues do not need Stephen Brett, they have Isa and McAlistair.

Just watched last week's Crusaders-Bulls game. Brett deserves a black jersey and should join the squad as Carter's backup.

whooo there Simon!
If Evans can get back up to speed after injury I think he is the number 2 firstfive. Brett is good, but man he's still young and inexperenced. I wouldn't want a world cup semi final resting on his shoulders. You don't want to rush him too much and ruin his confidence either like Toe-"tit hands"-ava. |

Nup. I'm a big Evans fan, but he's done nothing lately to make me rank him above Brett. He looked pretty half-hearted in Saturday's game.

yhea I'd have to agree with simon , id rate him above evans at the moment.
the AB selectors are spoilt for choice , so many guys playing well at the moment , epically in the froward ..... Kind of the opposite position from the Aussie's heh. |

I would replace McAlister with Brett.. but then I've never really been a big McAlister fan...

McAlister's been on fire at second five.
Kelleher at half with Ellis or Cowan as backup. Carter at first five with Brett as backup. McAlister at second five with Mauger as backup. END. |

Maybe McAllister will improve as 1stfive backup for ABs this season, I dont like him in that position normally as he doesnt have a good tactical boot or seem to have much width on his game, he seems better suited to 2nd-five. If he could develop a bit more vision at 1stfive he would rock cos he is a fairly big strong unit unlike Evans.

Well Conrad Smith is a shadow of his pre-legbreak self so I'm not sure. You know what? From the games I've seen recently, I'd put Toeava at centre.

I still have faith in Nonu at 13, especially alongside those other players. They can do the thinking and play creation, let Nonu do the smash and tackle. Complementary in my book.

Nonu doesnt seem to be as much of a boofhead this year and is playing pretty decent but hes still not the sharpest tool, I agree Toeava is showing great form but its too early to select shoe-ins for the ABs IMO, havent even got to the Semis yet.

If they're considering Toeava they'd better give him a huge amount of game time in the tourist series and TriNations. Can't have him choking in the big world cup games like he did in last year's internationals.

Toeava is great... when he actually catches the ball. I still think that he just spills easy passes too often (the same could be said of Nonu I suppose).
Nonu can pull out those game breaking runs where he smashes through 3 tackles to score a try which shouldn't have been scored. But he too can be inconsistant. Bringing him on in the last 20 mins would be great for that impact. I haven't seen enough Wellionton games to say about Smith, I liked him before his leg broke though. He would have been my pick. I guess my fears over toeava can only be proved wrong by giving him game time. |

I dont think Toeava dropped the ball once against the Tahs.

Somehow I don't think Henry will take guys into the world cup with less than 5 tests under their belt. Corey Jane and Stephen Brett would both fall into that category.
Kelleher, Weepu Carter Mauger, McAllister Toeava Rokocoko Sivivatu McDonald, Muliaina (if fit else Howlett) |
