Nematode worm's 302-neuron brain is mapped, reproduced in software, uploaded to a Lego robot. Robot starts acting like a worm.

I can't get my head around the fact that it's not "if this then that" logic programming. It just "happens".

Is it more like "keep doing this until that.. then try something else"?

It's the connections between the neurons/processes that defines the "logic". There is still an element of "if this then that" in each neuron, it's just that the arrangement provides the emergent behaviour.

It's not really a mystery if you consider a single transistor does the same sort of thing, but combine several [billion] of them in a particular way and you get a processor which obeys an instruction set and remembers state, etc

The arrangement of the connections didn't just "happen" - that's where the intelligent designer played his part.

from the diagram there's no feedback from the motors. detecting the current flow to the motors and feeding that back as varying levels of pain when the robot hits an object would be more effective than a nose sensor imho. the robot would then feel the grooves in the tiled floor, for example.

Does a worm feel that?

The point was to simulate the neural engine, not to Sperg Sperg.

Oh and lol, intelligent designer.

it has a CNS and yes will feel that.

Yes, they've simulated what they wanted to achieve but if you look at their other videos you can see they're struggling a bit with its bump and worldly reactions.

I think you are crediting 300-odd neurons with a bit much sentience, similar to how pet owners imbue their animals with human personalities.

Just FYI, a roundworm has 302 neurons. A jellyfish has 800. A leech has 10,000. A fruitfly has 100,000. A cockroach has 1,000,000. A human has 86,000,000,000.

It tends to scale up pretty rapidly when it comes to sentience.

You don't need a neuron network nor sentience for reactive motor movements.

In before some posts here from what must be reactionary finger-jerk reflexes as proof of that.

Does anyone know why on concrete footpaths, at some of the joints/expansion cracks, it appears they have ground away some of the concrete (usually with a circular fashion) leaving a bit of a rough surface?

I see it everywhere and it bugs the shit out of me because I just can't think up a reason for it.

When a concrete slab on a footpath shifts so that there's an edge that's higher than the rest of the footpath, the council grinds down the offending edge. Guess it helps prevent people tripping and smashing the faces, maybe ACC noticed a lot of claims. I started noticing the practice a few years back.

My 60yr old mother fell on one of these at the start of this year, broke to top of her humerous clean off and fractured her shoulder blade, estimate for recovery is around 12 months all going well... for 2-3 months ACC had to pay for a Taxi to take her to any med appointments, cover her work income, pay for a carer to help her dress etc.
I noted about 2 months after her fall all of the paths for about 3km around the area where it happened had been ground down, would have been a bit nicer if it was proactive rather than retrospective. I would assume the same in the above case...
