Currently a trip from AU to NZ and back again involves 28 days of self-isolation.
Bugger, there goes the quick weekend trip home I'd had planned for June.

My mother in law was due to fly back to NZ on Monday, we changed her tickets to leave yesterday as we saw the writing on the wall.
RIP to any poor schlep who works in enterprise access/gateways. I imagine most business units have failed to test/roll any BCP and now shit is too late. Checkpoint/RSA etc will sharpen the knives with those wanting extra licenses. We've made several missions to Costco, loaded up the chest freezer. Stacks of flour, oil, rice, drugs, etc. We have enough to last an easy 2 months if need be. Run gas at home, have plenty of solar power to keep us going I'm working as a digital nomad so travel is no problem. I'm really surprised that QLD are still sending children to school though. |

Last week was the death of the petrodollar.
This week may be the death of banking as we know it. Major banks suspend their share buyback programs. https://www.fsforum.com/types/press/...hare-buybacks/ Quote:

Here in NZ we have a policy called the Open Bank Resolution (OBR) that kicks in when a major bank is about to fail. Essentially what happens is that every customer's savings balance gets a permanent haircut in order to prop up the bank and keep it going. This was brought into play after South Canterbury Finance collapsed in 2010 and taxpayers had to bail out investors to the tune of $NZ1.6 billion. The government of the time was not keen for that to happen on a larger scale with one of the major banks, so they shifted the burden to customers. It's hard to say whether OBR is a good idea but it's better than a total bank failure where customers lose almost everything.

It's not good enough that banks that keep a fraction of their reserves (btw that fraction is now 0% this week, soo lend and invest the whole fucking stack) in the bank while the rest is gambled and invested. Then when that gamble goes toxic they cry to the government that they can't be allowed to fail because of all the innocent people who will be hurt.
So the government chooses the least painful option short term and writes laws like bail in, and the central bank invents trillions to keep the banks afloat. We get a haircut either way by a Cyprus type event, or currency debasement. Banks know they can play chicken with the economy all over again, and the government will save their skin next time. Thanks Bill Clinton and the Glass–Steagall legislation. |

A joker at the pub confided that he walked into a bank and asked to withdraw $10 - was told to come back tomorrow when they had got some in - common practice I think. ATMs still max out at $400 here? Asking for a friend...
