As much respect I have for Colin Meads and his wonderful service to NZ rugby I dont agree with all of his statements. I think he has lost touch a little bit since his last test in 71. I dont really think he is really able to relate to the demands of the modern game on the players. He played an average of 3 tests a year for 14 years, plus he didnt have a Super 14 to contend with. Sure it was the era of the amateur etc etc but the demands on players now is greatly increased with around 14 tests played a year.
"Yet Graham Henry swears he sent down messages to them. What the bloody hell is rugby coming to? You have someone sitting in the box and trying to get a message to the captain. - Thats modern sports...it happens in Soccer, AFL, Rugby League, NFL, Basketball, basically the majority of modern ball sports send messages on field... "In our days we weren't even allowed to leave the field at halftime. Once the game was on the captain was in charge and you never even heard from the coach until after the game. -Its as much for the 1/2 time shows, sponsors things and letting players rest in a quiet environment... "I think we're getting over-coached and over-organised. You now have four selectors, a tackling coach, a scrum coach, a lineout coach and you have a couple of technical advisers. Now, which of those buggers do you have to listen to? - Video analysis provides a level of depth for understanding an opposing team never before available. Having the specialist expert coaches is imo a no brainer as the head coach cannot seriously expected to be an expert in lineout, scrums technique, etc etc "We've become too technical. I heard a player say on Monday that they have light training and are watching a videotape with this video analyst bloke telling them which side the ball and player are going and all that. - Again I think its wonderful knowing that opposition player X passes 80% on the inside run, or the opposition team set plays from the last 6 matches etc etc.. Seriously Colin we love you champ but this sounds a lit like the "Back in my day" BS. Last edited by _Incubus_ : 28th April 2008 at 22:13. |

If yesteryear Meads was playing today he'd be wheezing on his back 20 minutes into the first half.

doesn't despite the guy made the right calls in advance of the mistakes being made. I agree he had a bit of a back in the day speech, but in amongst it was some very credible stuff.

I cannot understand how Henry, the assistant coaches, the selectors, and the NZRFU board haven't all been sacked. It just boggles the mind.

I agree with what Meads said, he raised some good points about teams being over-managed, and not required to think for themselves.
As for the shot at Meads fitness, the man worked for a living. He wasn't a gym-bunny. He didn't require managed diets and strict workout plans to stay fit. |
