Ethereum

Anyone heard much about this? Looks full-on.

It basically is some crazy open source hybrid of a distributed virtual machine service and bitcoin.

https://www.ethereum.org/
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethereum
https://github.com/ethereum/wiki/wiki

I haven't got my head around it all yet, might be just one more cryptocurrency. Looks like something more though.

Golly, it's still around?

Good on it.

Basically it's bitcoin, but not just for currency. A block chain, being a public and open ledger, is a good way of validating a contract between two anon people. (Look you agreed, it says so on the block chain).

Ethereum is just a technical implementation of that system.

Pretty sure code is in the blockchain somewhere. I'm more interested in seeing if anyone uses the Ethereum bytecode to write malware.

Apparently "thawing" is complete, price is jumping around a fair bit, mostly up though.

Value is going up and up. There are lots of apps in the works based on the framework.

Yeah, I saw that. I should have stuck with ethereum+price. Of course, no guarantees that's not something non-currency related as well.

My understanding is that we're trusting that humans are rational, we work for our interests. Ethereum only fails when a majority of nodes act against themselves. We already rely on smart people acting hopefully in our interests. With an open source system at least there is a window into what's actually going on.

The DAO perfectly demonstrated the system works. Two sides disagreed, now both sides exist simultaneously and in harmony. No one lost anything.

Ethereum is still VERY basement level. It'll be five years before we see the real power of the system. There is still much to be built, including reputation systems.

Not everything will benefit from smart contract decentralisation. But so much will.

The article is wrong is its headline. Currently we've only seen the rise and rise of Ethereum. If there is a fall, it hasn't happened yet.

It's a little bit worrying how much crypto is jumping right now. Bitcoin's never been worth more.

What's going on?

Maybe, certainly bitcoin's climb has been fairly steady, which fits with growing awareness. But since March crypto in general has switched gears.

Ethereum founder caps off the weekend's blockchain event with his talk on Taking Back Control of the Internet.

ETH is currently 1/3 the market cap of BTC. it has exceeds all the technological hurdles that bitcoin faces. It is essentially the new global decentralised server for the new internet.

From here ($210 AUD) ETH is estimated to at least triple in value.

also, some estimates put bitcoin at $30,000 in the next 3 years. Its the preferred alternative to FIAT currency especially in countries where their economy and currency has turned to shit. Bitcoin is the "safe" place to store your wealth.

Its only a matter of time before that scenario hits Australia, New Zealand, US. et al

get on board.

wallet services such as Coinjar, Coinbase are easy ways to turn FIAT into crypto currency.

btcmarkets is a trading platform that is somewhat user friendly.

Also. if you are watching Silicon Valley Season 4, keep an eye on the "new internet" that Richard is building.

Or. if you are watching Mr Robot. You can see the more disruptive / destructive side of crypto.

You need a client, which will set you up with a wallet. I use Parity.

The client downloads the blockchain and lets you manage your accounts, address books, etc. There's a Parity browser plug-in as well, so you can browse sites on the blockchain.

Time is right to register your ENS addresses.

EtherScan is a good resource.

Coinbase doesn't support NZD from what I can tell. You need another way to get NZD into coinbase.

I use kraken as an exchange and localbitcoins (escrow service) to buy/sell bitcoins in exchange for NZD.

In 2013 I mined a bunch of LTC. They are doing pretty well right now, but ETH and BTC are doing better!

I like ETH, seems like its solved a few issues that BTC has encountered. But ETH (the unit that powers the Etherium network) is conceptually quite different than BTC/LTC and other crypto currencies.

Eg: you could run a BTC blockchain on the Etherium network in exchange for ETH units. At least my understanding.

Its been another insane day for ETH. $240 -> $280 on the exchanges.

each day this week has seen an almost 20% daily rise steady across BTC, ETH, and LTC combined.

Ethereum Classic is going up too, which frankly is nonsense. I'll have to cash that out soon.

Almost half now. I wouldn't be surprised if the crypto surge in general is being generated by growing interest in the Ethereum architecture. Timing fits well with the conference.

The conference, and new reputable members of the Ethereum Alliance has definitely inspired some big investments. This week has seen almost $10B USD pumped into ETH.

Bought some ETH when a stuff article came out the other day about some old codger who had cashed up his gold stocks and bought $100k a ETH and double his money.

I went from nothing to holding Ether in about a few hours.

localbitcoin -> Bought bitcoin from coinhub via direct deposit to kiwibank -> setup account on poloniex.com -> transferred bitcoin from localbitcoin wallet to poloniex.com -> exchanged bitcoin for ETH -> setup wallet on myetherwallet.com -> transferred from poloniex to MEW. Done.

myetherwallet is the best of both worlds - no blockchain/client to have to download, but your wallet and all it's interactions are client side.

Also exchanged 1 ether coin for some DGD for shits and giggles.

Word is that ETH will hit US$1000 by end of August. $300 now, was $120 at the last dip.

The guy who got me into Eth said this morning. "I became a millionaire last night while i slept."

https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/volume/24-hour/

24hr Volume shows its mostly Korean and Chinese currency flooding the market at the moment

Total crypto market cap was $100b 4 days ago. Its now $110b.

People calling this a bubble are ignorant of where exactly the bubbling is occuring. It would be like calling Intel, HP, Cisco, and Dell the bubbly part of the dot com boom. the ICO crowdsales are definitely bubbly, but these new startups and tokens require an underlying tech to drive them. Ethereum grows in value based on the combination of valuable startups built upon the tech.

Curious how you know the geographical origin of the money?
Based on timing of trades?

I have a few positions in play. Had a stop loss get triggered at $306 USD earlier today on a few ETH I was messing with. Basically dropped to $304 then shot back up again. Was mighty pleased with the paper gains of ETH until I got an email telling me the stop loss had been triggered. Fail.
