I have two 4S units; a personal one and a work one. I see no need to upgrade. The wife has a 4 as does my eldest.
My youngest turns seven in October and she will get the then latest model; she will have the newest phone in the house. This is what we did for our eldest back when she turned seven. |

A 7 year old with a $1000 phone. You are the reason why parents get so fuckin stressed out and feel pressured to buy their children expensive technology.
"But Mary has one Mum, I'm missing out!" "Mum... I lost my iPhone I need a new one" :/

I think it's GT's own business what he provides for his kids.
Supplementary: And it's the business of the "competing" parent to sack up and say no. I did. It was easy.

You might consider investigating it if you're so fascinated. It's not something we're ignorant about.
MrSD is on the right track regarding certain socioeconomic pressures, although GT is under the influence of those same pressures, so it's not as simple as putting GT in the position of responsibility. (Although personally I put more responsibility on those in a position of wealth and power, but that's just my thing.)

Nothing, kids are awesome. Read my post again and carefully note where the expletive sits.

The significance isn't immediately obvious to me.
Plenty upsets me about children, particularly how we disregard their vulnerability in favour of morals we want to impose on their parents. I can't speak for others as to why it's an subject of frequent discussion.

LS stop playing dumb - it was a merely a whinge about 'srs issuez' leaking out of the politics subforum into the carefree trolling of the smrtphone thread.
If I had a problem with children it would have said "can we plz stop thinking of the fucking children in every thread?" |

Got my wife a 5S after her 3GS (my hand-me-down) finally lost the home button function - that bastard lasted a long and abusive life!
If they could just put Android OS into a 5S, god I would be so happy, that phone is so fucking sexy feeling. Screen is thin and weird but just the "feeling" of it, it feels sturdy, has that polished feel and look, like it won't pop apart from just blowing on it. I had to laugh at all the new features the new iOS had, that were (albeit prettier, much, much prettier) copies of Android stuff, but the phone runs so fast. Godamn it's a slick phone. I almost got swayed until I tried to do things I couldn't do because it's iOS. Still looking for potential future phone from my S3, S5 is disgusting looking and has the same shitty Samsung build quality, Sony Xperia Z2 looks pretty sleek, but is fucking huge and HTC One M8 (lol) looks like an awesome phone but I'm not sold on their gimmicky "ultrapixel" camera - don't really care about low light situations. I would be sold on the Xperia Z2 if it was smaller, but the HTC One M8 looks the part - god, none of them have that iPhone build quality though, that shit makes me angry :P |

Just simple things like putting widgets where I want them, alarm clocks, better weather app (found whatever Apple's used to be unreliable [and every app on Google too]). Minor annoyances but bundled together made a decent impact on usability for me.
Swiping instead of tapping for making words is a big one as well, I don't know if iOS has that, it might actually have it now. I find Google Now to be ridiculously superior to Siri in terms of understanding New Zealanders and getting info, too. I'm sure I can be countered on all those claims, and that could be true but to my knowledge there's nothing that will let me have all my stuff, "just right" in iOS. Moving to Android was a breath of fresh air for me, I know it sounds contradictory but everything just "works" for me. |

In saying that though, if you have no problem with iOS and are on an iPhone 4 (which is what I switched from, to my S3), the iPhone 5S is fucking fast and the camera is fucking sexy. Especially the slowmo video! It tracks super smoothly and everything is so godamn polished, it's really an amazing phone hardware wise.

S5 is looking really good. That low power mode could be a killer feature for many.

IMO the low power mode is the only good thing about the S5. It looks fricken hideous, the build quality looks like typical samsung (crap) and the only outstanding feature is the camera software which is usually pretty sweet.
From what I've heard most of the new stuff isn't beneficial, rather just there to fill up the phone. From reports the fingerprint sensor takes a proper, fluid swipe down to actually recognise your fingerprint and everyone has stated that you can't actually do it with one hand, you need the other to keep it stable. Nothing like Apple's one where you just put your thumb on it, mostly on any angle you feel like and it recognises it. And then you've got all that crap where they say they give you $500 worth of apps, but the extremely large majority of them aren't indefinite, they're limited to three, six, 12 months so that's largely useless unless you want to keep spending money to keep them going (and using the heartbeat monitor for most of their paid fitness apps). If their build quality was up to par I probably could overlook most of that stuff, but their phones just feel like shit and I don't want to pay around a grand for something that feels like shit. Especially when the HTC One M8 and Xperia Z2 are miles ahead, and without TouchWiz. |

iOS 7.1 released, available to all devices 3.5 years old or younger, worldwide, on all carriers, right now.
It'll probably have 50% of the userbase by this time next week. Ecosystem, bitches. |
