Agreed. A $700 price diff between here and the US is kinda hard to explain ($1000 for the MacBook Pros).

Nothing new. Take into the account the student discount in the US and PB/MBP are actually reasonably priced...

Looks like the black has some issues

Crapfuck - I assume its easy enough to order direct from the States? That mark up is waaaay too much

Anyone done this before, are there any 'hidden' costs (i.e. customer etc)

unless you get a "friendly invoice", anything over NZ$400 (right?) and you will be paying duty, and GST.

When you consider all the costs of getting it into your hot little hands, Mac prices overseas pretty much equate to the prices here in NZ. At least that's what I observed before trotting off to Noel Leemings. Also note that when travelling, any item of significant worth that is bought overseas will need to be declared and a duty will need to be paid.

Double crapfuck

Hm, we have an office in the states, but I'm think it may be a bit extreme to bump up the usual "grab me a bottle of decent Gin through duty free and I'll pay you back" to "buy me a $1300 Macbook on the company credit card and I'll pay you back".

[edit]Laptops can be passed through customer easily. We always travel on business, so unless its still in its packaging no one cares about them.[/edit]

Already placed my order for the white iBook. I've been told there's a 6 week wait until it arrives!

Have to ditch my Powerbook so if any wants a nice silver 15" lappy with 3 years remaining on the warranty then give me a shout

Just checked on trademe and the average price going for a 15 "Powerbook auction is around the $1800-2k mark.

I'm selling the powerbook as I need to be able to boot in to Winxp as well as use OSX. I also prefer to have a smaller screen as lugging a 15" around the city all day sucks and the internals of the ibook minus the built in Graphics card are better if not the same then my Powerbook.

1.33ghz G4 processor
Combo Drive
1gig Ram
60GB Hard Drive
Radeon 9700 64MB Ram

Purchased from Big Byte in November 2004. I managed to score a 5 year Warranty for a quarter of the price an Applecare would have cost

I'll double check and get a confirmed ETA. Let me know how your iBook goes once you get your hands on it.

from what i heard NZ gets 10% of Apple Aus stock, so yes 6-8weeks could be right.

Should get someone from Aus to buy you one, it will be cheaper

Nice review. Very impressive benchmarks, too, considering its so much cheaper than the Pro.

C'mon Friday!

I wonder if you'll be able to remove some of the grease and make it run cooler?

Hmmm, I wonder if a standard desktop 7200rpm drive would fit or if you need the notebook ones?

Father went to conference in LA the day after they were released so got lucky there.

As for the HDD, may just make a cheap 'n nasty linux server with wireless. That Air Tunes thing looks pretty nice, too.

Sysadmin: "Hey Simon, there's a white box here from Apple..."
Me: "OMGOMGOMG" (choking noises, falling out of chair noises, pulling oneself upright noises)
Sysadmin: "..."
Sysadmin: "GOTCHA!"

Oh well, maybe tomorrow. Or Friday.

He's the one who tipped me over the edge to switching -- he got a Mini last week and has been showing it off.

From a review of Vista beta-2: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12932382/

"Beta 2 is a good looking operating system with a number of new features, which will be familiar to you if you’ve played with recent versions of Apple’s OS X."

ROFLMAO

What an arse review, does he even have a clue? was the x60 even vista compatible? all new laptops that are vista compatible have a microsoft vista compatibility sticker on them, just like the XP and 2k and every other friggin OS had. the guy seems like a complete plonker. i wouldnt pay any attention to that review.

certain comments like

"It took me days to install a working version on a new Lenovo "
"but after four hours of churning away the laptop shut down and wouldn’t reboot"
"I tried again on the ThinkPad as a clean install, which meant wiping out everything on the hard drive and starting from scratch. That took about an hour to complete."

days?

and this is lol
"It also removed every device driver that I needed to run the laptop."

.. well duh

.."Downloading the drivers from the Lenovo Web site took a long time" how is this microsofts problem?

..and do you expect the same support from Lenovo that you got from IBM, obviously they are slipping if your brand new laptop doesnt even support the next big thing in software. again i fail to see how this is microsofts problem.

...well duh. HCL list anyone? or do people just expect things to work these days? heaven forbid you may actually have to PAY someone who knows more then you to do some computer work for you. No wonder techs dont get paid diddly squat anymore, people like this just expect to be able to do this stuff themselves.

Obviously not a very techy IT reviewer.

Expecting a 17" Macbook Pro this afternoon to setup for a client. We've had it on back order for 3 1/2 weeks now. Takes ages to get here.

Kinda off topic, but there's a vid on youtube where they play a MS vista presentation and overlay all the images with OS X screens. Funny cos its true

There's a few of them -- the voiceover is from MS's Vista presentation at CES in January.
