PS3: alright, what the fuck upnp/dlna media server actually fucking works
anyone?
ive tried: tversity(windows):works quite well but the service either stops working or the server stops responding to requests mediatomb(linux):works ok but is SO slow, and doesnt seem to transcode, at least definitely not out of the box with alot of tweaking. the hardcore linux geek in me wants to use this, but the real person part, says what the fuck, it shouldnt need to be this hard. twonky(windows): shit, doesnt support or transcode half my files umm probably a couple of other shit ones. maybe ive been a windows admin too long and have become truly lazy, but isn't there a media server out there that just serves a variety of media reliably? anyways. who uses what? |

We just use Twonky for Linux, but only for MKV stuff which has had the container converted to VOB. No complaint, stable as.
For everything else we use XBMC running off a samba share on the same box as Twonky. The PS3 has a long way to go before it gets anywhere near that good. |

There are actually PC and Mac XBMC ports (think Mac Mini in the lounge) if you need more horsepower. I've never looked into them though, so no idea how stable they are.

I'm using tversity - Video rss feeds work, all media files I've tried so far have worked.

Basically, none of them work well enough to be called a commercial-quality solution. The Nero solution comes close, but it is not 100% stable.
What I normally do is copy stuff onto the PS3 and then play it natively; it has never failed to play anything I've wanted it to. |

Soz GT, asked you about media servers in another thread. What is this Nero solution?

Pretty sure Windows media player 11 can do it.
I am just using Tversity. I tried it before Divx support and it was shit. The new version is nice and fast and just works. I don't do any transcoding as everything seems to play. I normally just copy a shit load of files onto my USB drive and play them off that, copying to the PS3 would be a pain. I am playing over a wireless connection from my PC. Works really well for standard divx files. Anything high quality or raw mpeg does't play well over wireless. |

FUPPES really isn't too hard once you've got a config file sorted. There's a few around if you look on the forums. I occasionally come across a problem where the PS3 refuses to pick it up, in which case I reboot the PS3 and/or a rebuild of the FUPPES database. Quote:

I havn't really tried 720p content specifically, I tried some very high quality MKV files. I dunno what the quality was though. I have standard antennas but I Also have two AP because my PC is about 40 meters from the PS3 which is right next to the AP. My setup is not using speedboost or anything like that so it is all 54mb. |

fyi, i agree, fuppes is the way to go for now, long as its setup right... plays 1080p for me, but i needed to hook up the wired connection for it to work reliably.

Only real issue I have, and I think it might be the fault of Tversity maybe, is if I pause something and leave it paused for a few minutes sometimes when I restart it there is an error so you have to start the movie from the start again.
To get around it I just quit out of the movie and go back in when I'm ready to restart it seeing the PS3 seems to keep your place for every file. |

I've been using 2 different UPnP servers for the last week or so. I actually think having a combination of TVersity and FUPPES is the ultimate setup of greatness.
TVersity for it's ease of use and for playing random OGG audio files that won't transcode using FUPPES (annoying as hell). FUPPES for everything else. I found FUPPES to be a little more stable than TVersity, although this can vary at times. P.S. PS3 is the uber win media centre |

been reading this thread with interest since getting a pS3
![]() Question: I have some HD files on my PC that are .mkv, will they play through this kind of setup, or do i need to convert them to .avi ? |

Haven't had any luck with Fuppes and transcoding. Everything else is great.
mkv2vob works fine, just wish there was a linux command line option that worked - everyone I've tried turns 5.1 into stereo. I don't know enough and cbf'd learning about the mass options with video/audio transcoding/remuxing to play with it myself. Annoying since mkv2vob seems to use mencoder etc anyway ![]() Ta for link to old thread BaM, I didn't know there was a file format the ps3 could read that contained ac3. |

Hmmm, I thought ac3 = dts, apparently not. This is why I'm not fiddling with files manually in linux.
I was already transporting the 5.1 to m2ts anyway. I assume there's basically no difference between using vob or m2ts to wrap the streams? |

At the moment I think it might actually be an underpowered box, I can see ffmpeg called and stuff starts, but nothing gets to the ps3. Stuff converted using mkv2vob is excellent. Wish they'd improve the ps3 interface for playing music though. ![]() |

I'm on Wireless G, but it still seems like it stutters on anything I play through Winamp media server or TVersity. It'll stop for a second or two every minute or so, frustrating enough to stop watching a movie.
wtb consistant connection. Having to copy all my media onto USB drive when I want to watch it is getting really fucking annoying.

im using tversity with a shitty 5 year old school wireless router, no complain of product...I did have an issue about a month ago when it appeared a neighbour had jsut got a wireless setup, lucky for me he had left teh default password on his system and lowering his signal strength seemed to clear up my occasional pauses, no more complain of product

It's only single IP but it is DHCP all across the board (with my adsl gateway and wireless router being statics)
Wonder if making everything static would make a diff.

I do however get ip conflict reports when my wireless laptop from work joins the network.
No clue how that's happening.

possibly you should change the channel your wifi network is on?

as silly as it seems it may well do, I find with my old router having forced statics to certain MACs solved my laptops connection issues, I would have to disable/enable the wireles nic 3 or 4 times previously to get a connection.

I have a NAS Dlink 323 with a inbuilt Upnp AV server. I stream all my movies via that. After a lot of research into firmwares it seems that the PS3 was fine for movie streaming at 2.4X and with the 2.5X update it seems that they broke something causing the streaming freezing bug. It does not matter what media server, or transcoding you do it seems that the cause lies with the PS3. Apparently after the 2.52 update things are a bit better but still I get freezes. Good on ya Sony!

Somethings gone haywire with my setup. I get smooth video by constant stuttering audio, figured I'd just buy an Apple TV and install boxee on it instead.
