It is doable.
I dunno. There's nothing about NZ's institutions right now that tell me "nuclear capable".

Well the NZ education system can't reliably teach reading and counting, I wouldn't depend on it being able to produce people that you'd trust to manage a nuclear reactor.

Unless you are just arguing that we couldn't get our act together to ratify allowing nuclear power stations on NZ soil.

I'm working under the assumption that the will is there. Otherwise the discussion is moot from the start.

If that's the case, nobody said it had to be a public enterprise.
So the govt being retards doesn't really come into it. We have companies designing, manufacturing, and launching rockets into space. We can handle constructing a local power station from prefab parts sourced overseas.

Our institutions are what provide our expertise. Nuclear technology requires a high degree of expertise. I don't think we're up to it. In fact I think we're heading in the opposite direction of being up to it.

I'm not saying we can't get there. Be we're so very far off, and I don't see the will to turn things around.

Your talking like we have to start from scratch or even rely on local institutions.
This is an already solved problem. It is a known problem which is why international organisations, not the least being the ones with a vested interest given that they want to sell their reactors, provide the framework and tools to get countries up and running quickly in this situation.

28 years is a long time. Plenty of time to train staff to run a modern mostly automated SMR, as well as leveraging international talent locally as a stop gap - which we only have ourselves to blame for requiring.

However yes the will is a problem. But as I said this thought experiment doesn't make sense if you discount the will to even try.

I can see the intended point these disruptive types of protests are making i.e., that our lives we're distracted by now aren't sustainable if things keep going they way they are.
However I don't think these protests are very helpful in getting this through to people.

It's a brilliant protest. They've got a lot of attention and the painting is behind glass, so nothing was actually damaged.

And we get to see who outs themselves as indifferent to climate change all the while. When our kids and grandkids scream at as about our inaction, we can point back and say "look, these are the people who valued stuff over your futures."

We can expect this kind of behaviour to grow and grow, as people feel compelled to action, but struggle to find actions that are meaningful and effective.

Reducing the supply, in a market frequented by lower-income people, during a cost-of-living crisis, of an essential product that has superelastic demand, has no negative outcomes of course

By that I mean they got lots of dopamine hits from the affirmationlikes they generated from their peers on social media, none of whom would ever lower themselves to buy budget supermarket milk

I dunno, I don't really see it. Right now the thing to do is to just walk out with your groceries. If you're asked to pay, you say no, keep moving.

Obviously that's only really effective if you're indifferent to what people think of you, if you have no opportunities that depend on your reputation.

Okay? You wake up grumpy? Perhaps an extra carriage return would have sufficiently separated the tangentially related phenomena for you?

There were a bunch of protestors doing that in Countdown a few years ago, maybe 10 even?

Curious to know what consequences turds like these face when they interrupt other people's livelihoods/business/life/money.

Further updates on the NZ should be on board with nuclear as opposed to useless virtue signalling topic:

https://news.byu.edu/byu-profs-creat...nuclear-energy

https://www.ksl.com/article/50505054...s-how-it-works

Also note these are NEW types of reactors so the old 'NZ doesn't have the specialists' argument doesn't apply - nobody does. The time to get in on the ground floor is now.

Right now nuclear is competing with our already 85% renewable power generation and plenty of new renewable options coming online that will compliment our existing plants, such as offshore wind farms.

I think the public would change their minds if a specific implementation had been fully fleshed out, with clear benefits laid out.

Your reply just comes across to me as pontificating TBH.

Those things are givens and hardly relevant.
Nobody is expecting nuclear to be popping up into the market right now and becoming a political issue right now.
This is about the future. It has already been established that we are going to need to grow our energy supply in the future.

Infrastructure moves slowly, so the time to talk about it and get foundations in is early.
If people continue to pontificate based on naive opinions and short term vision, we end up in the exact same place 20 years in the future.

I already said what was relevant - i.e. further updates.
All the base discussion, which you were involved in, including drawn out reasonings, already happened.

Looping back to the naive "oh we don't need it right now, maybe one day" thing just seems like opining for the sake of it.

I guess the point was the specifics of the technology which is discussed in those articles and how they are (or are not)
1) Free of many of the common reasoning and misconceptions to dismiss nuclear out of hand.
2) Potentially well suited to NZ in the future.
3) In reality possibly actually align WELL with NZ's 'clean green' mantra

I was observing the local realities on the ground.

No doubt there are those at university right now who have an interest in the role of nuclear energy in NZ. I could see how student projects might lead to full scale scoping of a nuclear plant. If something of real value is produced, I can see kiwis changing their minds.

Sorry for being combative. I have some adrenal issues going on right now that make me behave similar to someone on prednisone lol.

My main point was excitement about this type of technology progressing as I believe it would be great for us and the sooner we get into it the more chance we have of becoming a world leader and net exporter of the tech rather than a customer reliant on external technology.

If you own a Mac and work on a network drive or share files with anyone at all, you owe it to everyone to run this command:
Code:
defaults write com.apple.desktopservices DSDontWriteNetworkStores true
And then reboot. No one wants your shitty .DS_Store files polluting everything.

I'm stupid enough to fly on the 23rd. WHY.
The flight leaves 08:15, so need to be there "2-3 hours before" - ~5am - during one of the busiest times of year. Will be lucky to not be a plague-bearing COVID chad by the time I get to my folks in Morrison's Bush.

OTOH, I actually get to spend time with my family, which is going to be awesome

Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful for the nice weather, but it winds me up seeing the gorgeous sun in my garden knowing it will start trying to kill me if I wanted to spend more than a few minutes chilling without putting sunblock on.
