Nobody at team hacksung (the team behind galaxy s2, note, s3, note2, gtabs… official CM ports) plans to buy it, neither develop for it. There are two variants which will be a pain to maintain, the bugs we have on the s3 will probably be there on s4 too (camera), and we all know Samsung ability to release sources while staying in line with mainline. Yes qualcomm release sources, but exynos sources we had were far from actual galaxy products. I’m pretty sure the same will happen for this one.

so.. let me get this straight. The carriers AGREED and signed a contract with Apple. And now somehow in retrospect their freedom of choice to do something similar with someone else was somehow not there? So there were no S3s, HTC phones, nokia phones.. none of that was available in this alternative reality.

Maybe on a phone bigger than mine, like a Note or an iPad I'd use multitasking, but I've not used any sort of multitasking that iOS doesn't already have as well. I'm not even sure what multi-window is meant to do for a phone like the S3.

For what it's worth, I've been really happy with HTC's after-sales service; the Desire S that I bought in Hong Kong stopped booting, and they fixed it for free despite the fact that it wasn't strictly an international warranty.

That by itself isn't all that particularly noteworth, but I found them exceptionally pleasant to deal with through the warranty process. So yeah, I'd buy HTC again. Assuming they're still around next time I'm shopping for a phone, that is.

Not quite. They've taken a different slant with the camera sensor and are using larger pixels on the sensor to increase low light performance.

Yeah I dunno, 4mp does seem low but I was fine with 5mp on the iPhone for ages - some of those Nokias with 37408481481431mp might take high resolution photos but sometimes they also look pretty shit. I'm super happy with the S3 camera, though. If the One is even slightly lower than the S3 camera it will be off the list. I'm a camera phone photo whore so that's what matters most to me :P functionality second!

Seriously I just don't get why people want to have a huge Megapixel count, are you printing photos? Are they larger than 8x10"? No? Then anything over 4 MP is a waste of your time worrying about.

Honestly instagraming photos of what you had for lunch or the 'coffee art' that hipster barista just made for you doesn't need 12 megapixels of douchebaggery.

I think it's a good choice by HTC. Half of the pictures that people take on phones are in lowlight situations, and a lot of those 13 megapixel phone cameras don't get close to their stated resolving capacity.

I'm looking for sub $300 phone for a family member at the moment, touchscreen etc, they aren't too "smartphone" savvy(I also think they will learn to use it).

Realistically buying one of the high end phones on offer would be OTT for this persons requirements, however i've been looking at the Google Nexus 4 (I realise it's more expensive but I figure I can get it from the Play shop and use shipito/youshop to get it over here - if anyone's done this, please share your experience).

What would you guys recommend in that $200-$300 range?

Some of the phones i've looked at:
Sony Xperia SP (not released yet but soon will be I imagine)
Huawei Ascend W1 ($299 from 2degrees)
Huawei U8815 Ascend G300 ($216 from warehouse)
HTC Desire X ($299 from bond n bond)

Any suggestions/advice would be much appreciated. Chur

TBH, getting someone who isn't smartphone savvy or not technically inclined a 'cheap' smartphone thinking it'll be ok cause they don't use smartphone features is asking for trouble IMO. Better to get a dumb phone.

If you cheap out on a smart phone you just get something that's fiddly and doesn't work properly (even for phone calls potentially!)

Personally I wouldn't go any further down than Xperia U / Galaxy Ace II / HTC One V

Those three were the ones I whittled it down to doing the exact same exercise as you three months ago. We got the ACE II (NOT the pro), and she loves it. Personally I liked the HTC one better.
