I trained with a couple of lady-soldiers, Can't fault them on their soldiering. A full female platoon would be a thing to behold, to be sure, but the numbers here (most countries I'd imagine) are lacking to make it a viable option.

I've never been good at dealing with people being all shot up and I doubt it'd sit any better with me to see a woman in pieces, key argument against using female soldiers right there. Could you stomach it? Could other woman?
Casualty of war has traditionally been a male occupation and I don't think equal rights will ever get to equality in that area.

You explained that really well. That absolutely makes sense. So why not have exclusively female combat units? I'm guessing that a menstrual cycle when you're on deployment could be a big hassle though.

Fair enough, I guess I was raised on stories of 1956 Hungary - the men might have had the rifles, but the women and the children were often the casualties. When war is in your backyard, gender doesn't really come into it

I don't really think it's healthy to think about it this way. The scale is on a completely different level.

For example, our nation goes in to mourning because a single soldier dies. As much as I value his contribution, and feel for his family, it's not really a big deal, is it? Not in comparison to the thousands, and thousands who die every day from friendly forces accidentally dropping bombs on them, getting caught up in suicide bombings, crossfire, stoned to death for adultery, etc. etc.

Really, don't get me wrong, I TRULY appreciate what that soldier did on behalf of his country, but fuck me - there are people who don'thave a choice in this, unlike him, who still get blown to smithereens. I feel more sadness for them, if I'm honest.

It feels to me like the DominonPost, and to a lesser extent the Herald (which imo is now the lesser of the two evils), is desperately trying to turn this into a rally of "Get Our Troops Out!". I imagine their editors are salivating at the numbers of people who will buy the paper to keep themselves up to date on the daily break news on the scandal of withdrawl from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Which, as has already been said here, is not what should happen, and surely not what will. A soldier was killed fighting in a war zone. That's kind of what happens to soldiers in war zones. I don't think it should even need to be reported (and I doubt the father voulunteered the info, and was probably asked pointedly because if he'd said "we should withdraw" that makes for an awesome headline to sell papers) that the Dad doesn't think we should, that John Key doesn't think we should, and that Mateparae has said we wont. It's a war zone, it's to be expected there will be deaths. We're just lucky it's been so few so far.

The angle of fire the bad guys would have been putting on our boys would have made any effective response pretty hairy at best. Two elevated positions firing on you? Keep your head the fuck down. All assumptions from what I've seen though.

If I was him I would make a complaint - the casino let him gamble despite the ban so they should also let him win. It's a bit late to enforce the ban after the casino has already accepted the bet - poor form IMO.

But the ban had expired, so it was OK to let him back in.

But indeed, if they had accepted a self-imposed ban from him, on the grounds that he had gambling issues (assuming since it's not mentioned why he was banned I don't think), then obviously the bit where they let him bet again should be the issue. Because addict gamblers get off the rush from knowing they might win, not the win itself.
