Anything the ps3 will play off a usb thumb drive or USB HDD, will play over tversity or other media center, without transcoding. So basically, you are doing in wrong .

But yeh, most newer MKV files can be converted to play in under 2 minutes, and can then be played over any media server.

The problem really is the people that are encoding these files. Why use MKV as the container in the first place. (yes it would be nice if Sony/xbox added support) but with the amount of people that use the PS3/xbox, it would be simple for the encoders to adopt a new container/format that works with existing setups.

big ass mother effing bump!

Okay so I've been using PS3 Media Server for ages now but I've started running into problems, namely with 720p mkv's with REALLY high bit rates or with 1080p movies (any of). I have a wired connection from my media centre (PC that is a dual core 2.5 with 2gb ram) and i have transcoding on for them but they still stutter intermittently. It's weird because sometimes my server CPU usage will just spike to 100% but most of the time sit on about 30% but nothing really out of the ordinary happened during the film during that time to provide a cause.

I tried mkv2vob'ing all my 1080p movies thinking this would solve the problem as it wouldnt have to transcode them anymore, just play them but still I get zee stutter. Is this 1080p content such mad incredible quality and bit rate that this machine truly can't pump it into the ps3? Is the PS3 struggling to handle it?

If so, does anyone know if it's CPU power? GPU on video card or memory that could improve the situation? I really don't want to have to drop the quality of the output or it just defeats the purpose of having 1080p content.

sounds like a buffering issue, has to pause quickly intermittently to fill the buffer back up

I can play 1080p stuff that's been through MKV2VOB, over a 100Mbit wired connection from a 1GHz P3 running Linux, with no issues whatsoever.

The only difference is I'm still using Twonky server, because: a) I paid for it early on, and b) it works 100% fine, all the time.

edit - just a thought: your media isn't fucked, is it?

I'm using a 100MBit wired connection also, your machine sounds way more underpowered than mine, mental that mine is struggling ... hmmmmm. The media is fine as it plays fine for other people I know and on other machines.

I wish PS3 Media Server could be configured with a buffer bigger than 600mb, that's probably not enough, why not just hit the ceiling with it and make it 2gb or something mental I just don't know.

So, you havent changed to to full lossless quality then as the default is not lossless? Could you please change the quality to very high (lossless) and let me know if you get the same performance? What spec is your media centre?

I have never been able to get PS3mediaserver to work. Tried three different machines and a different router. Gave up in the end.

well actually, if your ps3 is in a DMZ, its logically disconnected from your LAN, so theres your issue. the only reason to add anything to a DMZ is to open it up to the internet whilst still protecting the rest of your computers. definitely not a requirement for a ps3.

SD ..yeh, just on the bottom ..will say v3 right next to the model number.

and yeh as soon as i typed that i realised what i was saying ..but dmz or not..does the same thing. at least i think it does ... will have to check ...

i put it in a dmz to start with beacause often you will find some games, such as EA ones ..specifiy ports which need to be open etc .. so just thought fuck it .. DMZ it.

but yeh i better double check that before going off and buying another router.

does the same thing with mediaplayer, nero ..any DLNA thingy.

Have you tried putting your PS3 on DHCP and having your router assign an IP to it?

Doing that in conjuction with using UPnP fixed a lot of issues I had with my PS3 on my network.

Am using a WRT54GL with DD-WRT.

oh and of course doing the same thing with my 360 has allowed me to have both connecting to the net and keeping the NAT open for both.

Previously I'd resorted to switching the DMZ everytime I'd wanted to play online with one of them.

I reluctantly took mine off Static IP, but using DHCP worked.

For some reason DHCP works better in conjuction with UPnP that way.

I'm reserved the specific IP's I wanted my xbox, ps3 and tv to have by MAC address it's just as good as having a static IP anyway.

Oh and not sure if I've read it in the previous posts, but I seem to remember something like there being a UPnP setting on the PS3 itself somewhere?

Huh? I don't get why you would need to give your PS3 a static IP or reserve an IP for it, explain?

Because I want to ensure that certain devices are leased certain IP's by the DHCP server based on their MAC address.

It's an alternative that seems to allow my PS3/Xbox360 exist on the network with an open NAT connections (can't remember what the "type" was on the PS3) as oppose to giving them static IP addresses and having them appear as having closed or moderate, which then results in connection issues with other users when playing online.

Oh, I don't play online much :P

Goddammit, i swear its this transcode buffer, with some 720 and most 1080p stuff it exceeds the maximum 600mb transcode buffer and stutters, grrrrrrr!!!

holy crap ... fixed.

so yeh i already had mac based reservation setup on my router for my ps3 .. but what i had always done when setting my network settings on the ps3 was manually put in the IP address i had picked out on the router. kinda redundant doing that i guess ..... and in the end i guess that kinda messed things up.

because i went through the network setup wizard on ps3 again and this time set the ip assingment to auto .... bam .... streaming works!

mint. saved me almost $200 guys, chur.

Yerp...

Also if the DHCP reservations had been setup to properly relay (eg iphelper).

Shitty routers might have difficulty setting DHCP flags :P

The other thing that's pissing me right off at the moment is subtitles. How the fuck are you supposed to know if a movie needs english subtitles in it before you watch the movie? Such a pain when you get half an hour in and you have no fucking idea what they are saying.

ok, can someone answer me this...

I am having trouble playing a particular video file on my ps3, the audio doesn't seem to appear.

I've had friends tell me they have no issues with playing the audio of said file on their PS3s, which leaves me to wonder what exactly may be stopping me from hearing the audio.

Have the particular file on my USB stick.

Perhaps a setting of some sort?

This happened to me with the optical out settings - HDMI doesn't work if you have it going through this channel iirc: settings here [playstation net]

Hints
•If you change the audio output settings, the system will no longer be able to output audio from multiple output connectors at the same time. For example, if your system is connected to a TV via an HDMI cable and to an audio device via a digital optical cable and you switch to [Digital Out (Optical)] under [Audio Output Settings], audio will no longer be output from the TV. To output audio from the TV, switch the setting to [HDMI], or select (Settings) > (Sound Settings) > [Audio Multi-Output] and set the option to [On].

using ps3mecdia center at home (got a ps3 for xmas woo) over wireless connection (shitty connection as i am in the basement)
get pretty constant DNLA errors (a few diff ones) have played with settings on the pc but im guessing this is probably due to the shit wireless being bad ?

(basically wondering if i just have to man up and buy a switch + cabling and bridge the network thru the computers wireless - a terrible solution but cabling to the router is not an option)
