Maritime Union of New Zealand president Garry Parsloe emailed supporters this week, saying Ports management had agreed during talks to drop plans to contract out work to casual staff. "Good news," he wrote. "The Port Company has agreed to pull out of their Contracting Out proposal."

I agree with McCarten, albeit for different reasons -- if this is true, all the management and board at PoA should be fired.... for being gutless, capitulating to union scum, and wasting and continuing to waste ratepayers' money.

A Queensland coal mine run by an alliance of BHP Billiton and Mitsubishi will be closed, according to a statement released by the operators ahead of another round of industrial action tomorrow.

Doing something simply out of spite is never good business and you don't make a billion dollar business by making dumb decisions. The article even states the real reasons for the closure.

It must be an uncomfortable situation for the management and board being stuck between the unions and a Labour mayor and at least a few left leaning councilors. I think McCarten is probably right that they should have caved at the beginning and saved everyone a lot of bother.
