Just scanning the Engadget coverage...
So Apple thinks it's bad implementation on Microsoft's part to let Windows mobile let applications run in the background because it drains phone's resources. They think better solution is to push messages through a proprietary push service that Apple will control and third party will subscribe to - I guess third parties will have to buy a license too. Hmmmm.

Just to eat my own words MobileMe actually looks like a very comprehensive service http://www.apple.com/mobileme/guided...tml?size=large
Pushing email and contacts sure thats fine and handy, but the idisk (same as the dropbox) system looks polished too. Wonder with the email if you have to use a [email protected] or you can use any old email account (gmail)... |

If its made by the same people who make spjas , it'll be an unreliable pile of shit that never connects to a pc regardless of how many times you install the software, then will mysteriously die after 1 month and need to be replaced with another one , which wont connect to a pc and then will mysteriously die after 1 month.....
is there an echo in here ? here. Wank factor / off the scale |

For whatever reasons MS got dealt with for using monopolistic practise, Apple is by far a greater threat in my opinion. Very scary how they are dictating terms for what is only a phone, and judging by this thread length there are plenty of tools who will give their fist born to get one. It's only a phone. There will be another one after that, and another better one after that.
Cheap Nokia phones I find on buses ftw yo! |

Monopoly means you're the only supplier, or you have so great a share of the market that you have a disproportionate advantage over everyone else. Apple don't even have that in smartphones, let alone the phone market overall.
There's no law against companies offering dictatorial terms in a competitive market. If they can do that and still have their stuff sell like hotcakes, well, they're obviously doing something right. |

Um, I'm talking about people freaking out over the total price.
Phone has to be worth around a grand $NZ. Take the difference and divide that by 24 months. How is that uber-expensive? |

Um, the point of the Slashdot post, that I quoted, was that there is no $199 iPhone in USA.

they may not be that easy to get, although the law in some countries may make it easier than in others.

iPod Touch now? or iPhone later?
Should I get an 8GB iPod Touch now, or an 8GB iPhone after July the 11th?
I'm leaning towards a touch now, and I was wondering what NZGames thinks? ==== 1) I don't care that the iPhone is a cellphone. I would still get it if it wasn't. 2) The reason im even asking this is because the iPhone has GPS (touch doesn't). I could get an iPodTouch and gps in one. 3) What I use the GPS for is position logging so I can geotag photos. I can get a USB GPS stick that does this for $USD 55. 4) I currently spend $10/month on my cellphone (I have no friends). Ok, so there are the reasons. Now lets talk abount the money. 1) iPhone will need to have a contract with it (I assume 2 year min) 2) cheapest contract is the Choose 20 ($20/month) 3) Exit fee for Choose 20 is $160 4) Since the exchange rate is falling, I'm gonna assume the iPhone will retail (with plan) for $299.95 So, unlocked phone will be at least $460 straight away, or $799 after 2 years. Touch is $290, or $590 after 2 years (using my normal cellphone). So if I can live without GPS (or buy it seperatly), the touch is still a better get. ============= What does NZGames think? iPodTouch NOW? or iPhone Later? =============

If you don't give a toss about the phone in iphone, then ipod touch is basically what you want.
I guess price is an important factor for you, in that case I say wait until iphone is out. Right now all the prices about iphone are guesstimates, so you are not comparing Apple with Apple. Also if you wait until iphone is out, there is a chance the ipod touch will drop its price by then. It is win-win if you can just wait a bit. Unless you want the ipod touch like NOW NOW NOW. |

Yea, I forgot to mention, I can only get the touch today for $290, after that someone else might get it

I'm wondering the same thing myself today actually. No cheap $290 touch here though

I'd personally wait for the iPhone.
Better to have features and not use them, than not have features and need them IMHO. |

I've got an 8G iPod Touch, had it for quite a while.
It's a great device and it lives in my pocket every single day, everywhere I go. Great organiser, perfect for work & appointments. Contacts are great to browse through and the Google maps are great too. If you're going out on an unfamiliar trip just load up the path on Google maps from your wifi before you go. Music/photos/videos are great (as they should be). I want to get an iPhone because I use the organiser, contacts etc of the iTouch so why have a separate phone/weight in my pocket when I can just get my favorite gadget with a phone built in? I'm going to wait though. I want to see them in action and make sure they get a chance to do some bug fixing before I fork out. Luckily my work pays for all my phone usage, work & personal so I'm not worried about contract pricing etc. So anyway, in my opinion you will just want an iPhone anyway after you use an iTouch for a while. I would just wait. |
