That may be acceptable if it weren't for the fact that newspapers use it as a cover-all excuse for being incompetent.

Exactly. Sometimes I wonder if the reporter actually understands the story they're writing about.

Last post on this I promise...

If you compare reporting by newspaper staff to that of the omnipresent super reporter bot 5000TM it's really hard for them live up to the same standards. But I guess you can't. Because super reporter bot 5000TM doesn't exist.

Referring to a common hueristic: quality / speed / cost. I'm not going to elucidate on that as I'm pretty sure everyone understands what a deadline is and how that affects news reporting.

Hindsight is an exact science. Reporting is not.

No jail for child pornographer

Ok, wait. I could be completely wrong here, but I was under the impression that to be a pornographer, you had to actually make porn. As opposed to view it.

Otherwise, I think everyone on this forum can pretty much put down "pornographer" on their CV.

I wish Stuff would take the digg/delicious/facebook/etc buttons away from the bottoms of their articles, because I think their lack of attention to detail is a bad reflection upon us as a nation.

A lot of people are totally retarded when it comes to the issue of crime. I'm sure that's quite a surprise for a lot of people. Harsher penalties != less crime. Infact it often results in worse crime. It's time to move on from the ignorant focus on punishment as the solution. It's only a solution to the helplessness we feel. Punishment is a seperate issue from crime reduction for the most part. If we want criminals punished harshly for what they've done, well then we can look at punishing them, but people need to stop thinking it's any kind of solution to anything.

Prisoners 'acting up' if they don't have a chance at parole anyway? Surely there can still be punishments for bad behaviour and rewards for good behaviour, even if you aren't going to ever let the murderer out?

"The policies aim to improve public safety through deterrence and by locking up serious recidivists for longer."

I can see the benefit of locking up serious recidivists for longer - it makes sense really. Improving public safety through deterrence probably won't happen though - in the USA where there is the death penalty for murder in many states there are still people being murdered.

It's a good thing you're a criminologist and have this thing licked. All that's needed now is for you to educate the retards on the Proper Way to go about dealing with criminals.

White supremacist executed for 1994 murder

A Georgia convict has been executed for the murder of a follower of his white supremacist group.

William Mark, 52, was put to death Wednesday by lethal injection at the state prison at Jackson, the second person executed in Georgia this year.

Mize was convicted of the October 1994 murder of Eddie Tucker, who was shot after he failed to follow orders to burn down what Mize considered to be a crack house in Athens.

Prosecutors say Mize shot Tucker in the head with a shotgun after leading him into some woods.

Mize's attorneys sought this week to block the execution. But an appeals court dismissed their appeals and the US Supreme Court also rejected a request to stay the execution.

Must be a miscarriage of justice, executing Mark when Mize was convicted of the murder.

I know this is typical media sensationalism but it irks me:

Headline on stuff main page:
Quote:
Wife 'feared' shooting
Margaret Bain was worried her husband would get a gun and shoot the whole family, the High Court was told today.
Headline on story:
Quote:
Bain trial: Wife 'worried about shooting'
"Mrs Dunne [a possible defence witness] is going to say that Margaret said Robin might get a gun and kill the whole family due to his depression. Was anything like that said to you?"

Clark said Margaret had never said anything about depression.
Womans Day type stuff should have no place in a 'news' website. I saw this part on 3 News this evening and she basically said hell no.

WTF is up with Stuff and their article on 'spooky' ghost photos. All of which are obviously done with Digital cameras set w/ slow shutter speeds as someone walked into frame. My god! It's like the laziest peice of journalism I've seen to date! And the fact it gets 'front page' status is a joke!

Do you have any idea how much effort it takes to reach at least one new low every week, 52 new lows per year? How long has stuff been running, a decade? OVER 500 new lows attained! What have you achieved in that time? 2, 3, 5 new lows? Pffft.
