"Gigabit" fibre speeds

Just had fibre turned on at home and Speedtest results are roughly 115Mbps up and down. The Chorus install actually beat the ISP modem's arrival so I just reconfigured a Netgear WNDR4500 that I already had at home so I could start using it.

I don't know if I should expect their modem to perform any better (or worse) but it would be nice if it could go faster than that (still roughly 15+ times better than what we had previously, first world problems etc).

What kind of connection speeds are other people getting and is there a modem out there that might give a better result? Maybe its just the time of day but 2pm on a weekday in the suburbs seems like it should not be peak usage time.

https://www.smallnetbuilder.com/old-.../74-wan-to-lan suggests that router can do 767.7Mbps. Perhaps you've been incorrectly provisioned or something hasn't been updated. Power cycle the ONT and router, leaving them off for that recommended 5 minutes.

Well if its anything like the amount of time we had to wait for fibre I shall celebrate sometime around 2024.

Anyway I have gone back and forth between the Netgear router and the provided Huawei router and the best download speed I have managed has been close to 500Mb/s. Right now it is running at 392Mb/s down and 299Mb/s up.

This doesn't actually impede anything but I figured I would revisit it sometime and I have now taken delivery of a Mikrotik RB750Gr3 routerboard to try out. $120 for a theoretical TCP throughput of 939Mb/s seems worthwhile!

Well that was effective - 733.9Mb/s down and 503.6Mb/s up.

i'd expect more. most likely need a better model.

move as many firewall rules as you can to raw (pre connection tracking) remembering they apply first (don't move your deny all rule there!)
ensure you're using fasttrack
ensure the device is up to date (esp 6.35+ if using PPPoE)
