Got the latest Debian testing ISO (with UEFI + legacy boot), maxed out the RAM (3GB) and put in an SSD. Had to go and buy CD-Rs (no USB boot on that model), but after installing grub-efi it even boots up fine without having to drop to grub command line from a boot CD.

Runs Renoise and Visual Studio Code fine, plays 1080p movies and saved it from being sent to landfill. Anything with Gigabit Ethernet is good enough for me! $30 well spent.
that's really neat, 1080p streaming is usually the only requirement on my end. i've repurposed a bunch of old tech for acquaintances by slamming a SSD onto the SATA interface and using open source for the OS.

alternatively, use code "BFTYC" for 30% off on a Global Windows 10 Pro license from https://www.vip-scdkey.com/software/...m_1227-20.html

^^^ i've done this a dozen times in the last 2 years with no issues(activation or future updates). for about a decade(*1.5) the various acquaintances scoffed at the several hundred dollar price tag to run MS legit. i never enjoyed using a KMS hack and i have no idea how these legit keys are generated but they do work. a lot of tech youtube channels promote this site(and also urcdkeys.com) so figured i'd drop some knowledge. sharing=caring

Pigs Can Game, Scientists Discover

Scientists have confirmed that pigs can game. Four pigs showed a remarkable ability to play a joystick-operated video game originally developed by NASA to test monkeys. The pigs were trained on how to use a joystick and then they gamed once a day for 12 weeks. They had to stop the study as some of the pigs had grown too large to stand long enough to complete the sessions. Each pig had its own individual aptitude for the tasks. Positive encouragement from their caretakers resulted in better outcomes in the game. A picture of a pig on one of the gaming consoles is available in the article.

if you own any iShares SLV (paper Silver), you may want to review their updated prospectus.

TLDR: they can no longer source enough physical silver to back their ETF... aka decoupling.

Facebook blocks Australian users from viewing or sharing news

Quote:
Australians woke up on Thursday to find the Facebook pages of all local and global news sites were unavailable.

Several government health, emergency and other pages were also blocked on Thursday - something the tech giant later asserted was a mistake.

Australia's government said the ban threatened Facebook's "credibility".

Those outside of Australia are also unable to read or access any Australian news publications on the platform.

Facebook's move is in response to a proposed law in Australia which would make tech giants pay for news content.
Companies like Google and Facebook have argued the law doesn't reflect how the internet works, and unfairly "penalises" their platforms.

The Australian government has said it is proceeding with the law, which passed parliament's lower house on Wednesday.

"Facebook needs to think very carefully about what this means for its reputation and standing," Communications Minister Paul Fletcher told the ABC.

Not just news - looks like every govt page and account too. Yes kids, as Australia gets ready to roll out the most important public health initiative in living memory - COVID vaccination - Facebook just banned every state health agency.

Also: all fire and emergency services (during Australian summer)

Also: the bureau of meteorology

Also: the domestic violence hotline, aboriginal legal services

Boy, when zuck has a tantrum he really has a tantrum.

I have none of the background information, but I think it went something like this:

AU broadcasters: Hey, we pay good money to broadcast content and news to an Australian audience, why should we pay when intenational tech giants don't have to pay?

AU govt: Good idea! We'll make them pay!

Facebook & Google: That's not how any of this works.

AU govt: It does now!

Google: Fine, well play nice, it's nothing for us.

Facebook: Lol, you need us more than we need you *unplug*

It did mine as well. But I didn't think it would be that long away.

30 posts a day would be 1 year. I think that is doable.

Although I have no idea how many posts on average there are a day.

I see a vocal narrative from Aussies on Twitter about how Facebook is being awful.
I thought more people would be upset about the govt trying to be so imposing without thinking through the unintended consequences.

I see it as more of an "everyone sucks here" scenario.

When the whole "fight" started I thought it was an attempt to make everyone look good:
- Scott Morrison stands up to big tech for the little Aussie content creators
- Facebook plays bad cop for a bit, then backs down with an announcement of how they will work to promote content creators

A little play fighting and flexing, then everyone wins.

Turns out the fight was real and yes, now everyone looks bad.

Yep, agreed. Just finished reading Bruce Schnier's book, Data and Goliath which is also a real good read: https://www.schneier.com/books/data-and-goliath/

It's a toxic place and a horrible medium to stay in contact with people imo.

The prelims were extremely satisfying. Casey O'Neill might be the most beautiful female in the UFC, great debut, still undefeated.

Today's shower thoughts

What if the fabric of time is so self-protecting that time itself won't allow for time travel at all or for at least any time travel that would be destructive in any way.

Meaning, everything in the past will lead to a path where time travel is impossible. Any candidate for its development would immediately hit a brick wall.

Or put another way lets say Joe creates a time machine, it may be inevitable that he changes something in the past which results in him not creating it in the first place.

That would leave the question; how close to its development could we get?

Maybe that’s our great filter. Every civilisation that develops time travel immediately destroys itself.

The filter would be at the level of the universe's creation. Universes that self-contradict are excluded from existing. If you find yourself in a universe, it's one that's survived the existing/not-existing filter.

Time travel in our kind of universe would contradict the existence of this universe. If we're here, it's because there's no time travel. We're as close to achieving it as we'll ever be.

Hmmm - with Phil the Greek being a bit crook with an infection, and then playing it down, makes you wonder if Chuck visiting him and returning teary eyed was more about Phil clearing the air about historic stuff rather than a goodbye.

Or cars just crash in tunnels when the driver is drunk.

Where's my hat? Bah - *goes to kitchen to make a new one*

psst, check out commodities HTF. Take your pick:

Coffee
Soy
Wheat
Oil
Uranium
Copper
Silver

It's not that commodities are suddenly getting better, it's that fiat currency is suddenly getting shit (i.e hyperinflation).

I had considered doing a similar experiment, to see what this "new and improved" Internet of Big Tech is like without the spying. Of course, I never did, because it's easier to wonder than actually build something.
