Auckland's new mayor is such a plonker:

Auckland Transport spent $90k in failed chief executive hire

Quote:
Auckland Transport spent $90,000 in its global quest to find a new chief executive, only to lose their choice at the last minute after he failed to get assurance of backing from the city’s new mayor Wayne Brown.

At some point moderate Republicans are going to see the demands of Democrats as less extreme than that of their extreme bloc.

The idea that Republicans could work with Democrats again would create a fundamental shift away from what's empowered this group.

McCarthy is in, with the position has been stripped of its power. Borderline ceremonial now, at the beck and call of a tiny bloc of members.

Eggs, obviously a conspiracy by big-galv to up sales of chicken wire for home use.

CO2 - now that's a much bigger worry. Luckily, I have switched to Pinot, and ordered in several cartons of Antipodes sparkling.

I fear for the beer drinkers, the pubs and anyone with a high tech hydroponic setup... Oh and people who need surgery.

So Todd group owns the factory/plant that has been shutdown for safety reasons. Other investments in the richest family in the country's portfolio: several wineries.

That's how you get to be the richest family in the country!

my brother in Christ, investing in wineries is not a way to get rich. That’s something you do when you’re already rich and are looking for a fun way to get slightly less rich.

This is an interesting article, a similar dynamic plays out here to a lesser degree:

The Two Santas Strategy: How the GOP has used an economic scam to manipulate Americans for 40 years

Quote:
Here’s how it works, laid it out in simple summary:

First, the Two Santas strategy dictates, when Republicans control the White House they must spend money like a drunken Santa and cut taxes to run up the U.S. debt as far and as fast as possible.

This produces three results: it stimulates the economy thus making people think that the GOP can produce a good economy; it raises the debt dramatically; and it makes people think that Republicans are the “tax-cut Santa Clauses.”

Second, when a Democrat is in the White House, Republicans must scream about the national debt as loudly and frantically as possible, freaking out about how “our children will have to pay for it!” and “we have to cut spending to solve the crisis!” Shut down the government, crash the stock market, and damage US credibility around the world if necessary to stop Democrats from spending money.

This will force the Democrats in power to cut their own social safety net programs and even Social Security, thus shooting their welfare-of-the-American-people Santa Claus right in the face.

And, sure enough, here we are now with a Democrat in the White House. Following their Two Santas strategy, Republicans are again squealing about the national debt and refusing to raise the debt ceiling, imperiling Biden’s economic recovery as well as his Build Back Better plans.

And, once again, the media is covering it as a “Biden Crisis!” rather than what it really is: a cynical political and media strategy devised by Republicans in the 1970s, fine-tuned in the 1980s and 1990s, and rolled out every time a Democrat is in the White House.”

Yeah, as an outsider, it seems like it must be easier to see how 2 faced the republicans are.
The exact same thing benefiting them is glorious and the best thing in the world, but against them is evil.

But then it really seems like Democrats can't handle it. Do they fear a backlash, which republicans don't seem to fear as much?
Do they think they have to meet in the middle to at least get some of their own way rather than nothing at all, where the republicans would go for it all?

Council to investigate Wellington Water's process for looking into leaky pipes after landslip

Quote:
It is likely that a broken pipe caused or significantly added to a slip which took out utilities in the Lower Hutt suburb of Point Howard, Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry says.

Residents, some who were forced out of their homes by the landslide, said they had been warning the council about the leaking pipe for months.

HENCE WHY FOREVER ALONE

Xi Jinping and 'dear friend' Putin agree that 'change is coming' in final exchange in Moscow

It's one thing to be corrupt and steal the wealth of your country for your own personal benefit - I think this happens everywhere. However, when the USA does it, it directly affects the entire world, having the global reserve currency. The USA cannot [or is unwilling to] repay its debts ($31 trillion+). Its banks are underwater. Banking as a whole is on a knife edge with all the "cleverness" that's been introduced into the system where profits could be made and wealth created/extracted by taking calculated risks. These risks paid off, until they didn't, and now the USA has been caught with their pants down.

I'm not taking sides and being pro-China or pro-Russia, I'm just anti-theft and anti-corruption, and if those Chinese and Russian leaders want to mistreat and steal from their own citizens, that's for their citizens to deal with. It definitely does feel like change is coming. Although I don't expect the USA to give up without a fight (if they can afford to pay their troops).

Do you think it would be a good thing for the USA to lose the privilege of being able to print endless currency? Do you expect the BRICS system to be successful? Do you expect things will devolve into a World War? I'd be interested to hear what you guys think. We all see the world through a different lens, so what are you guys seeing?

I think as a country we'll look back at it as a great day
Quote:
Senior law lecturer Dylan Asafoi says the proliferation of harmful rhetoric under the guise of free speech emboldens hatred and has led to overseas transphobic laws actively limiting trans’ lives.

“Even allowing these people to have platforms and spaces to proliferate that rhetoric is extremely dangerous.

“Any harm in limiting their speech is merely hypothetical and largely outweighed by the real harm and risks to the marginalised communities they actively target.”

Asafoi says the free speech argument tends to prioritise activists who come from privileged backgrounds over minority communities.

“Do we want to take a stand and protect marginalised people...or are we willing to just provide platforms under this rhetoric of free speech that doesn't have a lot of substance?”

I think you’ll find that speech in a public place by a member of the public about the concerns of an oppressed group is the sort of speech given the most protection.

Tolerance of speech is a social contract. If your speech is to advocate intolerance, you're breaching that contract and can't expect your speech to be tolerated.
