Perhaps they're just boring cooks, they know how to make 5 or 6 dinners but can't be arsed making anything more interesting. I find people learn this behaviour from their parents so it's kind of doubly bad this kid is only eating that shit and not enjoying what is and will always be a large part of life.

I was a pretty picky eater until about 2 years ago when suddenly I felt a desire to start trying new foods. It was like a switch flicked on and I was suddenly keen to try new stuff.

Previously if I tried something new that i didn't agree with, I would gag and choke and it was pretty lol/nasty.

Now I taste something and its like "hrm, I don't particularly like this, but I can probably finish the plate and just not order it again" or "damn this is yum as, coming back to this place".

My mum explained that something very similar happened to her at the same age, so idk maybe its genetic or something.

Just curious, is this nephew of yours from your side of the family (as in, the non-asian side)? It's just that growing up with a Jap parent myself, I have tried all sorts of food that is considered weird to the usual westerner and can't say I have ever met an asian who is a picky eater..I'm sure there are though. I suppose it's all about what you're exposed to from an early age aye? I feel sorry for kids who have parents who can't cook or don't give them a chance to try a large variety of different types of food..
