wellington VAN to auckland LAN (aka van2lan)

Hey dudes,

If you're in wellington and keen to help sort out a rental van to auck then reply here.

A few basics first though....

Looking for 8-12 people (more ppl cheaper will be for the trip).

We need someone to be 21+ with a full drivers license etc (two would be best to share driving).

We'd be hiring from 26th until 29th (three day minimum).

I reccommend that we take the insurance excess reducement fees which will cost a little extra but will put our minds at rest.

After checking prices out with several companies i estimate the cost to be somewhere in the vicinity of $60-80 including petrol, petrol bond, insurance extra and rental hire - both ways. That's a heap cheaper than the train at $120-140 return (each) or flying.

Let me know whos in, we'd need to meet this weekend to organise cash etc and sort out what's happening.

oh and if you've seen the players post there is a backpackers near the cafe. we'd need to book there as well.

yes a crash would be unfortunate, but it's more likely to happen driving down your road :P if we go with the extra insurance option if we did have a crash the excess would be something like $10-$15 each. all we need is a good driver thats on their full and 21+.

I'd say estimate total cost for transport / lan / food / accomodation at $150 per person (just guessing). Bring food if you want it will make it cheaper.

I'm sure it'd be okay to have just 1 over 21 year old with their full, because isnt it ok to drive on your restricted if theres a full licenced over 21 person in the passenger seat? So you could have the full licence dude inthe front all the time if he gets tired of driving and let the restricted people drive.

I'm pretty sure rental companies require drivers to be above the age of 21 and do not allow restricted drivers to drive even if full license driver that's 21+ sitting in front seat.

c'mon guys if we get 12 of us then we are sweet. it will only cost us about $60-70 each including petty to get there and back! Pretty cheap trip to aucks! and plus it's a chance for everyone to meet up once and for all. would be good times!

Ok guys we really have to move fast on this one. I just rang around 15 rental car places and the last one i rang is the best. BUT they only have ONE van left. Here are the details!

Piggy Packers Rentals

Driver must be 21+ with full license (standard)
10 Seater
$350 for 3 days
10 seater (possibly eleven - they might van swap)
$300 excess as long as 21+ with full license (awesome coz others are really anal with excess up to $2000 with some if driver under 21!)
$50 bond (cheapest around and refundable)
cash payment and do not require credit card etc.

here is individual price breakdown assuming 10 people and both ways:

$35 each for van
$5 each for bond
$30 each if we crash for insurance excess
$24 each for petrol there and back (at $120 each way)
$6 each for parking up there

TOTAL
$100 each (there and back!!)

Here is a comparrison...
$140 return for day train to auck EACH!
$120 return for night train to auck EACH!
$160 return on airnz to auck

ACCOMODATION
The backpackers posted on this forum is full - just called.

Auckland City Backpackers (ACB) has rooms
we can either split up and sleep in dorms with other people at...
$23 each per night (4-6 beds per room) or...
hire two rooms suiting 5 people at...
$144 per room per night

so....

$288 all up if we want to keep together which is roughly...
$30 per night.

IN CONCLUSION...

The cost will be roughly

$130 to...

get up there and back
park while we are there
sleep in the backpackers (if we want).

add $20 for lan fee...

and....

total is...

$150...

remember we still have to buy food and drink, so cost may range up to $200 depending on your budget. If you are keen (or still keen) let me know ASAP otherwise we can flag because we need to book soon.

Me and fatty probably dont need accomodation, we'll probably just sleep in the gutter somewhere, so fatty can get reamed by some ruggers from south auckland.
