Come on, we all know how this works. The media outlets are in competition with each other for headlines. The Herald got caught out doing something illegal to try and get a story, tried to bluff its way out, tried to turn it into "National vs the media", got pantsed.

I wouldn't be surprised if, after the election, NZ's news outlets were the beneficiaries of several juicy news items leaked by "highly-placed sources in government". All the outlets except the Herald I mean. I think being a Herald political reporter might be a bit of a career dead end for a while.
