Did you not read the bit about $979 and $1129 to purchase the 8GB and 16GB respectively without a plan? How is that not pre-pay? |

Is it just me or are these plans worse than the existing 3G data plans?

Well, there you go. Vodafone's craptastic iPhone plans means that the cheapest I could get an iPhone that matches my cellphone use model, is to buy it outright and use prepay. Thats, what, $950.
Haha, fuck that. I love my touch. its nice. Hmm, what I would actually do, is wait a year or so, pick up two not-working iPhones, and fix them up. hmm.

Wow Vodafone have their heads up their asses. After this little fiasco,it's become quite clear that Vodafone really don't give a fuck about anything but the almighty dollar. For the first time in >10 years for me, Telecom are actually looking like the lesser of 2 evils. |

I see that you can buy the iphone with no plans but it says you have to be on a "suitable" plan.
What's stopping you from buying one and just putting your prepay card in it? SIM block? |

Took what, a few weeks for the iPhone 1.0? I'd expect less for the 3G iPhone, given they've had a year to come to terms with similar hardware / firmware. |

But since you have to buy the standalone iPhone in person at a store, they will make sure you have a plan for it :P

The only reason everyone is getting up a fuss about this is because we now have benchmarks around the world to compare to.
If this was just another phone it wouldnt make a blip because it is priced similer to any other phones vodafone offer on accounts. But because it's the 'iPwned' everyone expects Vodafone to suddenly change their business and subsidy plans. Not defending Vodafone one bit - it sucks that we are pretty much the most expensive country in the world for everything cellular - but I'm not really that surprised at the pricing. Makes good business sense. |

Fair enough, sure. It would be interesting to see that if people used it on prepay - how much they would wind up paying for all the data/voice/txt's used over the 24 month period. |

I'm getting the 2GB data plan to start with, but I honestly don't think I'll be using that much. There are SO many open wireless networks around downtown that I can just hop.
So after maybe a months usage I can drop my plan down to the $60 one. |

Well after considering getting one i can now put those thoughts well and truly out of my head thanks to these plans.

you could do that, but it would lose its warranty, I guess.
I'll be very interested to see if vodafone backtracks on these prices within the next month. Like I read somewhere else, they had the potential to really shake the nz mobile scene up - imagine if you could get the 8gig for $199nz on the iphone 1gig plan for only $80/month. Telecom has nothing at all that could compete with that. Instead they really fucked themselves over and just managed to reinstate their image of money hungry jackasses. Remember, as well as paying $80/month for 250mb on a device that is designed for high data usage, you also get the bonus of vodafones world class service and support!

hmmm yes..this device has a prime focus on bringing mobile internet accessibility to the masses in a usable format. Not to mention strong emphasis on OTA services such as maps/directions, mobile e-mail etc etc.
I know! lets give it a shitload of voice allocation! Everything about these plans is retarded.

Just spoke to a Voda rep in store.
The only way you will be able to use the Vodafone network for data is if you have a data plan. No casual data usage at *all* IE: you can't have the $1 a day for your first 10MB. You *must* have a data plan. They're locking this via APNs in the firmware (love the way he tried to blame Apple's conditions for this one...fucking liar) That's gonna screw pretty much any overseas iPhone owners from using it as an internet device here. Also travelling overseas. No Data roaming whatsoever. So even if you manage to get one on prepay from Optus or whoever, you're screwed. 802.11 will work as advertised. Those $1200 1st gen iPhones at parallel imported are actually looking like a steal now. Last edited by Hazmat : 8th July 2008 at 16:49. |

cafenet could potentially make a killing off this whole pricing fiasco.
Also I think I read on geekzone that VoIP over the data connection will be a blocked service.
