Pandora's box has been opened after the Ihumatao protest has gained some sort of traction.

Aussies are gonna love this one - Maori claiming land in Sydney

I tumanako that nuinga stop littering rerenga korero with kupu poriro that I need to whakataki for manamatanga. Congratulations if you made it this far before ignoring me and everything I have to say.

Given the tools at National's disposal that are off limits to the likes of Labour and the Greens, it's a surprise National is ever out of power.

The US version of politics seems much more likely. New Zealand voters should be proud.

There has to be some Shangri La, Nirvana of IT projects out there somewhere.

Instead of the job mostly being juggling varying degrees of politics and incompetencies. Fucking CEOs making the calls on data structure cause of the opinion of a pet employee, meaning half the system has to juggle around a meaningless requirement.

It doesn't matter the sector. There's always some idiot sucking up your time because they keep editing CSV exports in Excel, stripping leading zeros and then bitching the export format is wrong.

Does it exist? A place where your work is largely technical, rather than coaxing people towards final decisions? Holding them as they rage and cry that they can't have everything they want?

Laugh

Is the data supposed to be accessible by some people with a web browser at some point? Then I reckon 50/50 chance all user data gets publicly exposed sometime during development. I think that guess is as good as any.

So suicides are at their highest ever in absolute terms and rising dramatically relative to the total population.

Good times to be alive in NZ. Except for a growing number.

as previously observed, suicide is a male problem. Male problems aren't important.

While it's a huge headache, some legislation similar to GDPR would be hugely beneficial to begin the accountability highlighting.

On the upside though - I'm pretty impressed by the speed at which the breach was communicated. We still don't have anything similar to Australia’s Mandatory Data Breach Notification laws though. That'd be the logical next step.

Yep, gonna get messy. Good commentary as usual from Godfery

Morgan Godfery: The solution to the stand off at Ihumātao

Quote:
Conservative writer Karl Du Fresne fears government intervention on the land protectors’ side could set “a dangerous precedent”. In another case and in another time, that point might have had something to it. But what distinguishes Ihumātao from, say, Bastion Point is the unusual and generous ask. The land protectors aren’t asking for the land to return to “iwi” per se. The land is “nationally significant”, kaitiaki-in-chief Pania Newton argues, and she and her supporters are calling for it to form part of the national estate in one form or another.
...

Why should iwi buy back the very land stolen from them in the first place? It’s like paying the burglar to give back your laptop. In treaty settlements — the base of Waikato-Tainui’s billion dollar wealth — iwi accept redress in land and cash worth less than 5% of what was originally taken. So settlements aren’t acts of crown charity — they’re a gift from iwi to New Zealand.

Indonesia to send contaminated recycling back to NZ

This is schadenfreude for me. Although, technically it's my problem too, but still. NZ's "we're too small" waste manageable is ridiculous.

Waste management costs how much it costs, it's not something we can decide is too expensive.

Petrol price 'horror' trumps horror of war

Quote:
A drone attack on a Saudi Arabian oil well earlier this week saw journalists resort to words like "horror" and "nightmare" but they weren't referring to the hundreds of thousands who experts say would likely die if war breaks out but a possible increase in the price of fuel.
Too fuckin' right.

The British government was due to express regret for the killing of Māori people in New Zealand after the explorer Captain James Cook’s arrival in the country in 1769.

But the statement from the British high commissioner to New Zealand, Laura Clarke, expected on Wednesday, to local tribes – known as iwi – is being made in private, and will stop short of an apology.

Chinese-owned nickel plant in PNG shut down after toxic slurry spill

Quote:
Landowners had fought a legal battle to prevent the mine from disposing of its tailings in the ocean via a deep-sea pipeline, however this failed in the courts in 2010.

Plaintiffs in the case chose to fire their lawyer and abandon proceedings, a decision National Court Justice David Cannings said was "to a degree, suspicious".

He said "reasonable people" would question whether the plaintiffs had been intimidated, threatened or paid off.
