There's one game I used to play on my old 386 that I haven't found since. The whole screen was tinted green, I'm sure it was called Hercules, it was 1 screen at a time that took ages to load, you were a big warrior (like Hercules) with a broadsword and you'd just have to get to the other side of the screen through obstacles and enemies. It was tough, I only ever got to the 6th screen. Can't for the life of me find it. It wasn't like Mario where the character was 1/24th the size of the screen, Hercules was about 1/2 - 2/3rds the height of the screen

Sounds like Rastan Saga, although that loaded pretty quick and was colour.

And it was fucking hard.

Hmm, nah it was definately just green. He was a lot bigger, it was almost ridiculous how much of the screen he took up compared with every other game.

I seem to recall a fucking annoying jump mechanic, ie once you press the jump button, he just jumps a certain distance that you can't control, making precision platform jumping nearly impossible.

it's been rather unsettling to discover that too with MAME. That no matter how many 'twennies' I might have had, I could not have passed GhostnGoblins or defeat any arcade games from my youth. It can't be my playing skills. No way.

"Gravy" doesn't necessarily mean brown-coloured meat sauce.

Baal you must be a tuff cunt. The end of Ghosts n Goblins is fucking nuts. Can't remember whether I MAME clocked it or not - probably blacked out in a fit of rage...

Whereas I could clock Shinobi and Shadow Dancer on 1 credit, because I'm a farking ninja ;D

Though they were relatively easy.
