Australian Govt introduces legislation for metadata retention scheme

Quote:
The federal government has introduced legislation for a mandatory data retention scheme requiring telecommunications companies to store customers' records.

In a surprise move, Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull introduced the Telecommunications (Interception and Access) Amendment (Data Retention) Bill 2014 into the House of Representatives on Thursday morning.

The bill allows law enforcement agencies to access customers' metadata without a warrant.

It places the onus on the carriers to do the retention, which will take resources, which means money. So far there has been no explanation of where this money will come from. The carriers will say "we're not paying for it", so if the scheme is forced on them they will pass it on the customers. Which means this just became the "Internet tax", which is a PR disaster.

lolz, typical approach to IT. Come up with the grand ideas of what an IT solution will achieve, come to agreement, shake hands, pats on back, job well done. All that's left is to hand it over to the engineers.

Stuff

two years per customer is a lot of data ... then you think of the whole infrastructure required to pull that off *shudder*

i mean in most cases some of that data is already there but is not being treated with any care ie not necessarily backed up or placed into reliable storage ...

and how long before the data is used as undeniable proof that the meta data is yours when in fact the logs incorrectly identified the owner's account let alone who was behind the end device

Fuck all that shit, can you IMAGINE the commercial value of an ISP data store? A record of thing every one of its customers has done online for two years? Every blackhat in the fucking world is going to try and get his mitts on that motherlode.

Data doesn't necessarily need to be held on-shore

Honestly, when will the disenfranchisement inherent to our traditional political institutions be enough that we finally get around to replacing them?

When people stop asking things like "when will the disenfranchisement inherent to our traditional political institutions be enough that we finally get around to replacing them?", that's when.
