Yo Chch, I'm really sorry for you, imma let you finish, but Auckland has had one of the worst natural disasters of all time. ONE OF THE WORST NATURAL DISASTERS OF ALL TIME!

Look at this:

Auckland KFC employee wades through water to work

Look, that woman had to wade through a deep puddle to get to work. OMG SHE'S CRAZY!

Aucklanders told to flush toilets only once a day

"perhaps only flush the toilet once a day"

Once a day? Can you believe that? Chch, I know some of you couldn't flush your toilet at all, but... come on. This is Auckland. First I'm told I can't flush my flushable wipes, now I'm only supposed to perhaps flush once a day? I just can't deal.

Wireless broadband no match for best copper technology, says report

http://www.stuff.co.nz/business/indu...gy-says-report

Well we did try to tell them.Wireless technology is not that great just yet.

Tweet from Moutter
'As soon as it rains Chorus' copper network faults clog up our call centres. This is why we're moving fast to fibre and wireless alternatives'

This is true.Autumn / Winter is the busiest.

Chorus is telling porkies.

Bonnar said that if people in urban areas saw copper broadband speeds slow to a crawl in the evenings, it would not be down to the network itself.

"I can say with total confidence that we run an uncongested network.

"That is a policy and technology decision we have made. So if there are any slowdowns at any time of the day or night, that is going to be due to factors outside of the Chorus' infrastructure."

Glad I left Spark.Be interesting to see how this pans out.If it isnt the network getting bogged down at night..then what is it?

Maybe... just maybe, the ISPs links? Remember everything goes through your ISPs gateway(s)

They should have differentiated "wireless" vs 3g/4g mobile. "Wireless" can deliver latency of 1-2ms -- as a total return trip between two wireless customers even. This can have a dramatic improvement on web browsing even when on lower connection rates

The problem is the wireless technology itself.Wireless uses a first cab off the rank system. So if your tower close by you is full it wont take any more connections so you might end up connecting to one 2 miles away.
It is not a dedicated connection as oppossed to fibre or dsl.

'Alternatively, maybe, just maybe they do get congestion.'

Agreed.Spark use Netgate still I assume? And thats owned by Chorus who also own the uplinks to the isams (which they own).

Rock 'n' roll legend Chuck Berry dies at 90

You'll find that on the Herald's website, but hidden out of sight. The headline article on the Herald is about Justin Bieber being a douche.

Saw a KITTed out Pontiac Transam on the motorway today. Very cool. Couldn't tell if the inside was done. If it had a scanner, it wasn't going. Police might not be happy about that.

Anyways. KITT. Fuck yeah.

It's the age of populism, anti-intellectualism. You can't expect culture and history to be valued. Money and power is where it's at, not people.

I'm not sure that's entirely true - I've seen news and articles about Chuck Berry everywhere I've looked in the past couple of days and not a single mention of Justin Bieber. While I do agree that right now we're living in a fucking anti-intellectualist clusterfuck, I think what you're seeing is simply the fact that the Herald is shit.

I think you missed my point. Unless I've missed something, the report doesn't differentiate between fixed wireless (e.g. Mikrotik or Ubiquity point to point) vs a connection provided by 3G or 4G. The performance of both is completely different. Pretty sure my post 5 behind yours made that clear?

Ummm yeah and? It's almost like there's some kind of philosophy behind every type of knowledge that humans have constructed. Who ever would have imagined that.

So within the first 10 seconds the guy explained that it's not any or every Wiki article, but a lot. That's strike one, Badmax.

Then, it turns out it takes a lot of links to end up at 'philosophy'.

Hey Jude, 20 links, Philosophy.
Islamic Extremism, 25 links, Philosophy. But you can only get there by taking the second link from Israel rather than the first, otherwise you end up in a Hebrew Language <-> Israel loop.
Adolf Hitler, 15 links, Philosophy.
That doesn't strike me as being the least bit impressive. Hell, Kevin Bacon is only 4 people away from Hitler.
Strike 2, Badmax.

Then you've got what Pixie said about philosophy being behind every type of knowledge that humans have constructed. Any word that has a Greek origin will lead back to philosophy. Surprise! Any mention of science leads back through its definition, via a circuitous number of steps, to philosophy. Surprise! So the idea that if you click long enough in Wikipedia you'll eventually stumble across the philosophy entry is pretty fucking lame.
Strike 3 Badmax, you're outta here. Pack your bags and fuck off.

Overreaction? No. Just pointing out how much you suck. That doesn't take anything more than a standard, run-of-the-mill reaction tbh.

That's because the ratio between the period involved and your lifetime is getting shorter. Back when you were a kid, it took ages for Xmas to come around, but now not so much.
