Cullen was awesome, easy to see why he has the record for tries.

I've said it before on this board, and I'll say it again: Christian Cullen is the greatest ever backline player (possibly the greatest player ever, in any position). That try against Aussie (the very last one in Ab's link) is the greatest ever test try IMO. But the last one in Jin's link for the Hurricanes is almost better...
Complete legend.

I don't want to take anything away from Doug, but I am a little sad at Christian's record being overtaken - there's some brilliant solo efforts in the video Ab linked.

Dougie and Cullen are two very different players, and have achieved their black jerseys and try scores by very different methods.
Cullen is the greatest counter-attacker I've ever seen. He'd get the ball and just run through the entire opposing team. When he was at fullback opposing teams had two options: run at Sean Fitzpatrick's forward pack, or kick over the top to Cullen. In other words, prepare your anus. Howlett on the other hand is much more of a team player. I daresay he'd be faster than Cullen in his prime in a flat-out footrace, but he doesn't have Cullen's sidestep, mutant upper-body strength, or freakishly deceptive "I have no idea wtf he's going to do next" running style. But without looking at stats, I'd say Dougie makes more tackles, makes more cleanouts, and gets stuck in to more rucks than Cullen ever did. I've never seen a winger work harder or be more willing to get his hands dirty than Dougie. I reckon Cullen's try score is a reflection of his own brilliance, while Dougie has often been the recipient of balls passed to him while he was in a clear try-scoring position. But Dougie works harder at getting the team into a good position to pass the ball to him for the try. |

Yep - all fair points, Ab. Although I'd question whether Howlett has made significantly more tackles than Cullen. From what I remember he could be pretty solid on defense.
Also, their try:game ratio is pretty close. Cullen's 46 tries came in 58 tests; Howlett's in 61.

www.rugbydump.com pretty good source of compilations...be sure to watch the JK 1987 RWC highlights, IMO the best running back of all time... http://rugbydump.blogspot.com/2007/0...rwan-1987.html |

I don't know how you can compare Cullen and Howlett. The game has changed so much within 5 years. You don't see the likes of a hooker hanging out on the wing like fitzy used to do now do ya?
It's evolved, and so the positions have as well. |

I think that's what we are all saying.......
