If the movie, Orphan hadn’t come out long before this story, I’d have sworn it was based on it 😳

Obligatory in air post from business class.
Next time I'm getting Premium Economy instead. Only real difference is lounge access before the flight and one less bag (which can be purchased).

^^ Yeah - Fun fact - login analysis will show you accessing the net from London as in-flight WiFi uses Inmarsat - so if you have travel savvy IT teams, they might wig out. Or not.

Job doesn't start until Tuesday, at the moment only I have reset access to the phone

Melbourne is apparently congested today so it's down to single-runway landings at the moment. Gone from the flight being 10 min early to 20 min late. Oh well.

This is what you want to see, I cleaned up a lot of my online activities after seeing what was in here. The location data is particularly scary, especially if they decided to "be evil". If the data is combined between accounts and extrapolated the conclusions they can come to are staggering.

HENCE WHY FOREVER ALONE

Wacked

I just spent a week trying to get an older (2013? not that old) PC to boot Windows 10 after install. Linux worked fine (of course), and I have an "identical" (newer BIOS) machine that has no issue. BIOS wouldn't even list the hard drive, tho it showed on the SATA port which was new to me. I tried all sorts, including several failing BIOS upgrades, Acer technical support, grub commands to work around it and all sorts of bcdboot repair commands, 3rd party disk conversion tools and Linux dual boot hacks to try and make the friggin thing work properly.

Turns out the cause was that I chose the default UEFI option when I initially booted the Windows install USB stick (causing a GPT partition table to be made which the BIOS doesn't like - it's MBR now). BIOS still won't update, Acer tells me it's broken, but I no longer care as it works perfectly now. What a cunt of a time.

TLDR: UEFI is the devil on older machines. Don't choose the UEFI option even if it happens to be listed first and appears to be no different, unless you have good reason.

While it's a Bernie Sanders quote, I'm not posting it for the political side of things, just for the analogy. I've always had a hard time visualizing large numbers, and this analogy was amazing.

Quote:
I like to use the analogy of a staircase, with each step on the staircase representing $100,000 of net worth. That's several years of working wages saved up for tens of millions of Americans:
  • HALF of people in the united states are on the base of the very 1st step. Almost 200 million people who can't even get one step up in this system.

  • Those households at the 80th percentile, richer than 4/5 Americans, are on the 5th step. That's about five seconds of walking to get up there.

  • Those with more money than 90% of fellow Americans, millionaires who we consider our upper-middle class professional class and live more than comfortably, are on the 11th step. A few more seconds of walking up from that previous middle-class step. Most Americans won't even come close to accumulating this much over an entire lifetime of working.

  • A billionaire is ten thousand steps up the staircase. That's enough to walk up five Empire State buildings. That's almost three hours of walking non-stop. You think they care about the petty squabbles of anyone on those first few steps or so? From these heights they couldn't tell the difference even if they wanted to. And yet those who've maybe ascended or were born on the first few dozen steps think they identify with this group as a class.

  • And Jeff Bezos? He's so high up it only makes sense to describe his staircase in distance. His stairs take him up 133 miles. That's more than halfway to the space station. That's more than 24 consecutive Mt. Everest's stacked on top of each other. It would take walking, non-stop, no sleep, over two weeks to ascend that high, each single step worth more than five poverty-level families in America combined.

Wow, only day 2 (or something) of the Grace Millane murder case.

The accused is completely fucked.
Phone Logs, web searches, lies, she dies and he stops for a wank, previous tinder dates.

But why does he have name suppression? Or do murder accused normally do if it wasn't made public during the investigation.

I figured it was in place so they had a chance of selecting an unbiased jury in a case that everyone would know about. That has been done now so it logically would no longer serve any purpose.

This guy doesn't seem like he panicked after everything accidentally going wrong. He was running on adrenaline after doing what he decided to do in the heat of the moment.

I was wondering that. Like after he is convicted, we will find out that he was charged or convicted for other crimes.

But maybe that's just tinfoil hat.

I think I found out his name when it happened, but I don't think I googled it.

I got out of jury duty recently, which would have aligned with being chosen this week for a high court case. Super glad I didn't get chosen for that one.

Every now and again I'll have NZGames Forums casually open in a professional setting, and I'll get a "hey.. is that NZGames?" sort of comment, outing themselves as an old school geek with excellent taste in gaming forums.

Last time it was Orpheus, and this week it was Sauce.

Hi guys

Pretty much. Even RNZ thought I needed to receive an alert about the details of someone's death.

I suppose it beats stories about another community service that doesn't have the resources to meet its commitments.

On the train in the morning I have my little catch-up-on-home news scan and for the past week or so it's seemed as if Stuff and NZH and Newshub et al have been spamming post after post after post with what I can only describe as ghoulish glee about the Millane case.

^ Yup - that, and the Amber-Rose Rush one happening at the same time in Dunners.

And a strange story about Goodnight Kiwi being resurrected as an on-demand bedtime story show, and Jeremy Welles and Hilary Barry reading a story called "I need a new bum" which has so far eluded me - although the comedy duo from the breakerupperers did do a fecalpheliac one about sheep shit.

Speaking of Slack, I've just started using Microsoft Teams this week. I'm not impressed so far.

I really miss the IRC style line by line chat.

Ahh Teams - we were an early O365 adopter, including Teams as soon as it was released - then discovered that the data being stored was not in the agreed upon Australia East DC, so we have asked for a please explain/tidy up. New instances now are apparently, so they line up with the Govt/DIA requirements.

After the news that Starship has had a couple of big Tesla batteries loaded into the nosecone to supply all the electrical systems, I am really, really disappointed that Scott Manley hasn't tweeted that Elon is using a Di-Lithium crystal configuration to power this thing.
