Designing a world...

So i've gone back to some of my roots and started writing again. Things are moving along nicely, but I like to work with some visual aids as well, i've been playing with Terragen and building a 3d representation of the world on which the events take place. I'm using this to create scenes of important events for rendering for a storyboard.

What i'm struggling with however, is trying to find some way of converting a globe to a 2d map. Has anyone had any experience with this at all?

Cheers!

Perhaps this is too theoretical (or conversely, too simple)?

This seems to be a Terragen specific guide to surface map projections. edit - link doesn't work; try search for similar terms, perhaps.
