citizenship

As you may or may not have noticed the Australian parliament is falling apart right now because all of a sudden it is apparent that a whole bunch of MPs failed to disclose foreign citizenship (or eligibility for foreign citizenship) before putting their hands up for election, which is a black-and-white no-no under Section 44 of the Australian Constitution.

So pop quiz: who here is a citizen (or entitled to citizenship) of where?

I know they used to (my sister, who is not an Irish citizen although "me da" is Irish, got one when she was travelling to the UK) - I think things may have tightened up a bit, I seem to remember a news article suggesting that I would no longer be eligible, but I'm not 100% sure of the criteria.

Edit: Perhaps my sister became an Irish citizen?

Yep, i received mine about 16 years ago via my grandmother. Though, i would imagine things have tightened up a fair bit since then.

The ironic thing is she was born/raised in Northern Ireland.

Surely that means you're entitled to Irish citizenship?

Yeah, though i think i have to spend X days there before first. Or eat a potato/drink/etc. Pretty good thing to keep updated. Need to check what the process is about getting passports for my two boys also.

NZ by birth, but my son was born stateless in Melbourne, so he only has NZ by descent. Should he knock someone up overseas, any grandkids won't be eligible for NZ citizenship.

I think my parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents are all NZ-born. Small question mark over my maternal grandmother's mother but I'd be very surprised if she were not NZ-born. I have to go at least 4 generations back before I find people I know were born outside NZ (England, Scotland, Denmark are the nearest... USA and more England a bit further)

edit, I was wrong. Paternal grandfather's mother, born Melbourne, Straya, 1877. Her parents born Hammersmith England and New York USA respectively.

There are worse places to be stranded

All my great-grandparents were born in England or Scotland and all flat-footed colonials since then.

NZ. All of my ancestors came to NZ before the 20th Century. My kids won't be able to say that though, seen as their mum is English.
