Alexa just wished me a "Happy Festivus" - time to get out the aluminum pole, endure bouts of strength and air grievances.

Merry Christmas I guess. My favourite Christmas gift I ever got was Quake 3 Arena.

I think my favourite was one of the original Quake mission packs. Scourge of Armagon if I recall correctly.

They just played a little tribute on the cricket, without explicitly mentioning why.

RIP George Michael.

Died relatively young, peacefully at home. Almost died of pneumonia a few years ago. Is it stereotyping to wonder if it was HIV rather than cancer?

Either way, rip

COAL FUEL CAN'T MELT STEEL HULLS

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk...-a7504236.html

Quote:
More than 1,500 passengers lost their lives when the Titanic sank on route to New York from Southampton in April 1912.

While the cause of the disaster has long been attributed to the iceberg, fresh evidence has surfaced of a fire in the ship’s hull, which researchers say burned unnoticed for almost three weeks leading up to the collision.
...
A team of 12 men attempted to put out the flames, but it was too large to control, reaching temperatures of up to 1000 degrees Celsius.

Subsequently, when the Titanic struck ice, the steel hull was weak enough for the ship’s lining to be torn open.

Damn, that would be some fire. I wonder how it started? Design flaw, or some kind of accident?

It was on fire while it was in port, and they put it out to sea anyway? If that's true, it's so stupid it hurts my brain.

^^ Rumour has it that's why they backed it into the mooring, so the damaged side would be starboard and the passengers wouldn't see the discoloured hull.

Could you imagine a deep fire in a coal store 3 stories high? No way that EVER gets extinguished. You'd just have to let it burn itself out.

It'd be too expensive and too impacting to PR not to. That's Go Fever for you.

Maybe the captain decided the iceberg would put the fire out.

Now I want to know how deep the Titanic was before the coal extinguished. Assuming it was actually burning.

Surely they could have gotten a bunch of dudes with buckets and just shovelled the coal out. Or gotten a big hose and hosed it all? It's not like it was an electric fire.

I'm not serious about any particular solution I suggest, but I am serious about the suggestion that there must have been something that could have been done about it.

No, they wouldn't have been able to make a difference. Deep coal fires get too hot - water simply evaporates - and if you try to remove the coal (assuming you could get close enough) you get chased out by toxic gas. And if you DID get deep enough there's a better-than-even chance of causing an explosion from ingassing of oxygen

Were their coal stores not able to be fully closed off so as to starve the fire of oxygen?

Good question, no idea - my comments were mostly based on reading I've done on coal-seam fires. Doesn't seem to be an option there, so might not be an option here either.
