RIP. He was phoning it in after his divorce, but that eighties-nineties stretch... good old-fashioned storytelling.

http://www.gizmag.com/m-blocks-robotic-cubes/29281/

Quote:
Known as M-Blocks, the devices were created by MIT's John Romanishin, Daniela Rus and Kyle Gilpin.

Along with electronics that allow them to orient themselves relative to one another, each cube also contains a motor-driven flywheel, that spins at speeds of up to 20,000 rpm. When that flywheel suddenly brakes, the transfered momentum sends the cube flying in the direction that the wheel was spinning. Because the cubes additionally have magnets on each of their faces, they stick to one another when they make contact, until the flywheel in one sends it on its way again.

In order to make sure that the magnets of any two cubes meet north-pole-to-south-pole, the magnets themselves are cylindrical, and mounted in such a way that they can roll in place. If the magnets on two cubes are brought together north-to-north or south-to-south, the resulting repellant force will cause them to turn until their north and south poles are facing one another – at which point they'll join together.

In their current prototype form, the M-Blocks can roll across the ground, jump into the air, climb over each other, and even move while suspended upside-down.

The researchers are now creating a group of 100 of the cubes, and plan on making more. "We want hundreds of cubes, scattered randomly across the floor, to be able to identify each other, coalesce, and autonomously transform into a chair, or a ladder, or a desk, on demand," Romanishin states in a press release.

It is hoped that eventually, swarms of their descendants could be deployed to perform services such as repairing buildings or bridges at disaster sites, performing reconnaissance in hazardous environments, or forming into scaffolding at construction sites. At that point in their development, some M-Blocks might be equipped with specialized features, such as cameras, battery packs, lights or sensors.

There were regularly kids at my school with expensive cellphones, decent cars, nice clothes (and this was a public school in the hutt valley 04) There were kids with smoking and weed habits which could cover the cost easily too probably.
Well, looks like those are more than affordable rates than what I'd been led to believe. I guess I'm also considering how much money those kids would have based on mid-90's youth rates, now a days I guess kids that can get jobs get more. Not sure why you'd pay someone to cut off their nipple? Also, if it's a festival, there'd be heaps of supply compared to demand, driving prices down...

Huh, so paying prostitutes for sex is a common thing that most guys have done? I guess I was just great at getting laid for free

Well, I guess you do need helping out.

You make selling sex sound like it's something a prostitute engages in with some kind of business plan in mind. I'm sure that's the case with some. But an alcoholic teenager looking for booze money is only thinking about how much the booze costs. Couple of boys with $10 each, enough to buy a flask of JDs, that's almost enough to get through the day.

But like I say, it's cute you think prostitution is so proper.

Yeah man, the fact that there's no governing body for prostitutes means the street workers must only charge a handful of coins.

An alcoholic teenager looking for booze money wouldn't be selling herself for sex, she'd be stealing it. A drug addict teen might, but then she's gonna need a minimum rate to pay off her pimp.

But hey, you're the expert *shrug*

Yerp. I have a couple of old Chopper's Nuts containers in the shed for keeping bits and bobs in - sent over by my brother the dodgey Sydney barman. Legend. Must watch the movie again this week. When I read the piece in the weekend paper about him it sounded like he didn't have long to go.

Just realised after going through my dockets that the reason the cab driver that picks me up from time to time in Wellington looks familiar is because he didn't always drive around basin reserve.

I've had him as a driver before and it was really weird. Here's a guy who at one time was national hero and he's the one offering to carry my bags to the car? Hell no, Mr Chatfield.

neato, contract is up for renewal at end of the month, got told i'll be given an extension till december 31st only as there is no budget for my role next year.
that's a bad feel right there. no more uni sloots, casual dress, 27" imac work machine etc. feel even worse for the guy who shares my job though, he now has 1200 pcs, 400 or so staff, research labs, teaching labs and 4 hospital clinical school sites to look after all by himself.

manager doesn't even have funding/budget allowance for casual staff when work gets heavy or if the other guy gets sick/goes on leave.

You should start up that importing-and-on-selling business you had going for a while there again.

Also, is pro photography an option? Do something totally non-IT for a while?
