Nothing about the editing/proof reading here buy
Boy racer struggles to get car insurance The story. Someone posts on Reddit that they can't get insured with the AA or Tower. Someone posts that they managed to get it through Fintel but probably shouldnt have. Another posts to try NAC because they specialise in this. Either this is a completely pointless BS story, or this is actually "paid advertisement" article that they didn't say. And of course there is no comments section to tell them that. |

Struggles to get insurance? The tosser checked with 2 companies before saying "Internet, provide to me the answer!" That's not a fucking struggle. Two companies.
There is no struggle here. There is no story. This is shit.

Good to see the Herald covering some important news.
A different article: Oh gee. Do you think the Herald reads their own news?

What the fuck is this? Speculative news gathering? Something may have happened, we'll let you know once the reporter has actually filed the story!

Stuff = The non-news lets just rip stuff from social media and re-post it site. Their reporting is abysmal and their proof reading (and checking that links actually take you to the appropriate story) is terrible. Let's not even start on the click-bait 'headlines' which bear no resemblance to the story at all

That's traditional media in general. Or maybe declining business models in general. Last gasp efforts to remain relevant/profitable.
I mean, the best world news comes from Qatar. What is up with that?

Because LS. He must have a bunch of subscriptions set up to various news sites and possibly has Al Jazeera playing in the background while eating pop corn at his PC.

Al Jazeera's journalistic standards seem on par with the rest of the world. That is to say it has its own set of biases and its own particular lens through which is views events. Some of the panels they have are superb.

The lens is distorted, but so is the lens I bring (which maybe why local sources appear less biased.) That said, Al Jazeera's coverage of minority issues is second to none. Which is probably to give the finger to dominate western values, which of course I love.
It's not like I'd hear about what's going on in Qatar anyway. We don't hear much about the horrors of Saudi Arabia in western news after all.

Western media is at least as bound, if by different pressures. The government of Qatar, Rupert Murdoch, commercial and political interests, whatever. There are few if any corners of the press that are free from non-journalistic influence.
I don't know what news you actually consume to make this judgement. I've watched Al J consistently for years now, it doesn't vary wildly from other news outlets. Its coverage of issues in NZ appear well within the realm of reality and reason, fitting with my experience. I've no reason to believe that their coverage of issues I'm not familiar with would be different. Had a flatmate from California for about a year. He got hooked on it. The stuff it taught him wasn't inaccurate, and a deeply different world view isn't necessarily propaganda.

This is fucking hilarious, it's like sitting in on one of my 1st year tutorials. All this talk of "lens" make me want to go back and read Chomsky/Herman (though they describe them as "filters"). Sure media ownership is super important but where AJ may falter on this one filter it's far far better off than most western media in terms of the other 4 (flak, advertising, ideology and sourcing).
Hell it's not like 99% of the American media haven't collapsed into an official mouth piece for the government in recent memory right?

AJ has less pressure from advertisers than those organisations operating in the western media sphere (i.e. advertisers hold less power), part of this is due to the mass of media ownership consolidation which has taken place in the west since the 1990s. Sourcing AJ is miles ahead, they use a far wider range of sources whereas a lot of US based organisations use a hedging pattern with their sources. Ideology and Flak are filters which would just take to long to talk about here and are way more complicated. Quote:
