Yeah but any decent mechanic will call you to say its going to go over your budget. Our mechanic called me every time something was going to be replaced that we didn't talk about before hand. But he kept to his quote pretty close.

If someone says $400 for the whole thing, fine, but make sure that if it goes over that you won't pay for it unless you were told it was going to go above that before they started work on it. Sometimes you have to take a hit, eg, Cambelt change, normally want to change the water pump and external belts too. But you don't always have to.

Lightspeed smokes meth, the idea that a verbal quote is going to be plus or minus 50% is ridiculous, what kind of fuckwit loser mechanic has he been using?

my mechanic doesn't do anything unless i say so. and he charges by the quarter-hour

My mechanic almost always charges me less than he quotes and will call me if he thinks it will be any more. But from between the point I explain the problem, to the point the mechanic understands the problem it makes sense that how much he thinks it will cost to fix the problem varies.

Obviously, things things like a service and a WOF will be static, just as fixing things required for a WOF. But finding the underlying cause of a mechanical issue, depending on what the issue actually is, the cost is not static.

I think charging $200 more without getting consent first is not on. But that the price may vary that much (depending on the work that was being done) doesn't seem unlikely.

I agree it's by diagnosis only, usually. So the quote should be in a range and the customer should be prepared to accept the range.

"Could cost $200 if it's X, but it may be Y which is going to be around $400, keen?".

But to quote $400 and charge $800 is shady, to whoever posted that.

I dunno man, i've pulled off heads thinking it just needed a new head gasket (it was overheating) and when i got in there some valves were cracked, price went up.

You never know how much it'll cost until you know what you are fixing. My mechanic will diagnose the problem with my car and then tell me how much, if i give him the green light, the diagnosis is free, if I take on the fix I pay 90 for an hour of his time and the use of his dyno.

It's a bit crap your mechanic never rung to ask, but seriously, for 600 bux i doubt they got jacked.

Cars are expensive. Not because of parts. But because of labor.

Not necessarily, depending on how much the quantum nature of reality interplays with our agency and will.

Ideas please!

It's my uncle's 60th on Saturday and I'm stumped on what to buy him. I could go with a nice bottle of wine (although I don't know my wines...), but he also really likes sports (rugby, cricket). So I was thinking maybe a sport's bio, but since I'm not interested in rugby or cricket I wouldn't know where to start. Can somebody please suggest a good sport's bio?

Any other suggestions welcome

The best present I ever got was my socket/ratchet set.
The second best present I ever got was my ratcheting spanners.

My dad was like "When I went to the store they were all sold out of rat-shit spanners so I had to get you these instead "

What are good brands? I'm sick of borrowing peoples tools for simple jobs, gotta go find a tool sale.
Drove around for a week with the fucking battery contact loose as fuck, jumping off killing power every time I started up just because I didn't have any tools laying around to tighten it up so had to wait for the maintenance engineer to come into work so I could steal his spanners

What the fuck, i'm sure we've (I have, at least) given you a list of 'absolutely necessary' tools for any man to have.

You claimed not to have any money for that kinda sillyness. So you can just go back and find that post. And that's all the advice you will get out of me, good day sir!

Going to try find a retailer who deals these.
Is there any point in getting ratcheting spanners if you're not a real grease monkey?

No, they are heniously expensive and are suitable for about 5% of the work, they just make some jobs a lot easier, but you can use a spanner for them, it just takes longer and makes you curse a lot more.

I'd definitely use them if I had them, but ~100 for 6 spanners... well... i got other tools i'd rather buy first

$100 for six spanners is actually not bad when you consider you can easily spend $30 on a single spanner.

I'd never trust Chinese made machinery in industry but surely when you're hanging doors, mounting child proof fire guards, hanging painting etc etc then the cheap shit will do? No?
Damn. I knew it.
