IMO TED jumped the shark when they couldn't get experts at the top of their fields. Instead of making it a less infrequent event, they instead take every hand gesturing, powerpoint crazy Joe and Jane Doe available. Add an over-enthusiastic audience who pretty much cheered on EVERYTHING.

You get crap as a result.

Well TED is an entertainment format, not a format for information. It's not just about people at the "top of their field", it's also about the presenters having to be entertaining and condense their points into a specific format. Form over function to the maximum.

Sure there's some interesting ideas/tech displayed through TED, but none of it goes beyond the superficial, none of it has the time (or the format) to actually go in depth about what the presenters are talking about. At its best TED is an interesting watch (rare now days), at its worst (which seems more frequent) it's the debasement of knowledge into entertainment.

Personally I prefer the SALT seminars.

Sometimes I experience you as the neener-neener who is cleverer than everyone else, like now. How do you access the vast volume of scientific information that is constantly being released? Or are you of the "throw my hands in the air cause I just don't care" variety who scoffs at any attempt to understand that is not formal university education at one of the world's top 50 universities?

I like TED because it introduces me (and can be used to introduce others) to the knowledge that we're accumulating and what I could be interested in.

So this guy used Raspberry Pi to make a contraption that would dispense treats for his dog every time an email is sent to a certain address. He has a webcam attached to it and it emails back a photo of the dog to whoever sent the email. Of course, I had to send an email.



Of course, so did everybody else on the internet. Look at that dog. He's totally camping the machine while treats continually pour out. Now gmail has disabled the account for 24 hours due to the volume of email it was receiving.

I'll tell you what my source isn't: videos of people pausing for dramatic effect, pausing for a slideshow to repeat bulletpoints of things that have just been said, and pausing for the audience to applaud themselves for being so clever. TED talks are like American football; if you cut out all the bits in between the actual speaking, there's like four minutes of actual information exchange. And sitting through information exchange at the speed of a normal human speaking voice is like downloading porn on a 9600 baud modem.
