From my own experiences, yeah, a car can step out suddenly if you possibly aren't paying attention. Jerky shift with too much throttle, patch of oil or some shit on the road etc.

HOWEVER

to manage to fish tail enough to leave the road, mount the curb and run down a kid suggests this guy was doing more than just relaxed attention to what's happening.
