Yeah, that much I get. What I don't understand is how a game which (as far as I can tell) doesn't seem to have any ultimate goal or narrative progression manages to capture the attention of so many players for so much time.

It doesn't have a game-level ultimate goal, but there's plenty (perhaps infinite?) of personal and group level goals to aim for.

But test cricket is a competition between teams. I can understand that in the same context as understanding Quake. Tbh I don't understand farmville either. Solitaire makes some sense to me, but only because in my understanding people don't play it the way they play WOW for instance.
