Just gave Minecraft a go, pretty easy setup, using this.

Has a lot of potential but too many problems to be playable. Mainly because of the low res, anything more than 20m away is really just fuzz. Mouse/kbd control isn't very good either, although that could be a UI issue or disorientation from being used to a very different kind of control. Like I moved my mouse up to hit a higher part of a tree and it didn't move. Then I looked up which made sense.

Still, these all seem like easily resolvable issues. Although I suspect it will take a couple of generations before the resolution is really optimal.

Virtual Perfection: Why 8K resolution per eye isn’t enough for perfect VR.
Oculus Rift creators also talk about perfecting latency and positional tracking.

Interesting article...

Rift owners now had them for a few months, worth the $$$? I'm very tempted, even if the HD consumer model is coming out next year (gut feeling is that will slide into 2015 at least)

I think the development kit is just as they say: not ready for primetime. It's a cool demo, but I haven't found anything I can play for long periods, even short periods leave me a bit queasy for about half an hour.

That said I still experience a "wow" moment when chucking the kit on in Titans of Space. That might be worth it?

Your profile says you're in London, if you were ever in the 09 I'd be happy to give you a demo or lend it to you. Same goes for any other pro-tiers.

Good news! Jodi has it at the moment, figure give him a couple of weeks or so to play then we can pass it onto you.

Interesting response to a question on Reddit about how the eyes perceive depth vs what works on the Rift:
http://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comme...ing_do/ccnsbhg

I think point 5 is the biggest drawback currently, and probably the easiest to fix.

The saddest thing about that movie is how old it is and how massive a gap we've had between "consumer" virtual reality kit ....

I stopped looking for VFX's a good few years ago since the 800x600 despite the "ooooh virtual!" factor ... couldnt overcome the 'orrible rez....
(that being said I'd still like to play Mechwarrior 2 in one :P).

Would love to give it a thrash in Planetside2, games already pretty as fuck eye candy.

Well, shit.

The chronic screen door, crap resolution, far away stuff out of focus, the limited field of view, the headset hurting my nose, the crippling nausea.

DOESN'T FUCKING MATTER

THIS

IS

AWESOME!

I have never felt this excited over a piece of tech In my life. The possibilities. OMG. A whole new genre of sci-fi novel is about to become a reality.

Hmm, by my calculations, you need a 7" display with a resolution of roughly 169000x105000 for retina quality vr.

hmmm.

Only had 30 min to try it this morning before I had to leave for work.
Tried the Tuscany demo. I've never spent so much time looking at sunflowers and roof beams. Although I wish it showed my body.
I tried the solar system demo after that, was more sedate and less OMFGish, but cool none the less.

Apparently there is a jump key in the tuscan demo. Gonna try jumping off the balcony. Having said that, walking up the stairs was super trippy.

A mate has downloaded heaps of demos and we'll be trying it out some more tonight. Try some rollercoasters etc.

Might try HL2 and TF2 when I have the guts.

That's a kind of compelling idea. A lot of visual artifacts would probably disappear.

I reckon we'll be see LSD and Rift tech used as a form of psychotherapy before too long.

If you want to try a real game Jodi, Far Cry 3 works with a little coaxing.
Likewise for dishonored which has some cool scenery to take in.

Both suffer from the fatal flaw that there is no seperate mouselook vs. head turn - but its still cool to try.

Is there anything to do alternate control schemes in games without using the built in settings? I saw this post on penny arcade by Gabe (the second post on the page) about some beta software for setting up custom controls for PC games on a Surface (I know: surface, lol)

Seems like an orderly fashion works best. I will be in touch once I get it back from Jodi. No beer required, just post your feedback here and let us anything you try that's particularly cool.
