Indeed. Daughter is still in lockdown at school. They have a bucket. And may have to stay the night.

Nutter live streamed it on Facebook, posted his manifesto, and is apparently an Australian.

And no, I have not managed to get to the pub.

Reminder: do not unquestioningly believe anything that you see, hear, or read about this tragedy. This is the golden age of disinformation.

Fuck. I hope NZGamers and their loved ones in Christchurch are safe.

This is a kick in the teeth for the city given how much work and love has been put into rebuilding.

I fear the upcoming media coverage of this.

Got the daughter and now but all supermarkets appear to be closed so no kitty litter - and the leopards will get to ravage the meatpack from the pub.

I am still unsure about a certain school - cops mentioned two shooter sites but the arrest pics and video make me wonder.

Agreed on all points.

Fark, NZH now reporting 2 separate shooting sites plus a car IED, 3 men and 1 woman in custody.

From what I can gather, the fourth person in custody has been removed from the equation - and was probably the person in cammo gear arrested outside Papanui school. Apparently not linked. But there was a chopper over the school for a very long time.

So 48 casualties and 40 fatalities so far. 30 at Deans Ave, 10 at Linwood Ave.

Deans Ave witnesses are indicating bigger numbers but have been told not to discuss further. One chap said he had people who had been shot being thrown over his fence to safety - and that it is possible there could be people who didn't make it in the surrounding properties who may not be found until tomorrow. Quite a big cordon around the area.

The arrest of the chap down Brougham Street/Strickland Street was one where there was an IED in the car, and probably fleeing from the Linwood Mosque - where one witness reported that a chap wrestled the gun off him and used it to shoot at the car as he sped off.

Oh - and she got to be #3 out of 15 to have to use the bucket while being locked in a classroom for 5 hours. P-yoooo.

Just thought - the logistics will be a nightmare. As I understand it the departed need to be in the ground before the next sunset? How does that work when there is an ongoing criminal investigation - do they need to perform urgent autopsies and gather all the data to enable the release of the bodies to the families to facilitate the religious customs?

Parts of Britomart were closed off in Auckland as the police detonated some unattended bags (containing construct gear apparently.) Guess this is part of the heightened security level.

I suspect unrelated, as that bag contained building site equipment. Wife was delayed getting home from work, as the area surrounding Britomart was cordoned off.

I... err - F*ck It.

Still in shock on this one.

I spent time reading the comments on overseas news sites to get a different perspective and most people are like "NZ - really".

I made the mistake of jumping on FoxNews to see the other side, but apparently, this clown was closer to home:

https://www.msn.com/en-au/news/austr...0XP?li=AAgfIYZ

On the flip side - Jacinda and Helen(and others) are doing us proud with their leadership in a time like this. I don't like her policies but I'm pretty happy to have her up there standing for us locally and globally right now.

It's surreal - seeing my next door neighbour on TV (and used in stock pics now) with a rifle slung over his shoulder. Just a few weeks ago he was apprehensive about having to be armed due to the idiots in Richmond and Bexley - his usual beat is keeping the peace and nabbing shoplifters at a local mall. I've seen him on telly in the light and the dark - now my biggest concern is when would be Ok to start up the lawnmower - he's had a long night.

I'm gonna vent a bit I'm on to being angry about it now. But what can we do apart from upping surveillance? I mean it's reported that the guy wasn't a CHCH resident or even usually residing in NZ. He targeted us rather than being a product of our society & culture. Would a court find that all types of white supremacy/islamophobia hate speech? Probably not but I think that public views of these groups (which there is a fair bit of it about) will go from the current stance of lol at these guys to fuck off. Also I hope that the kind of everyday casual racial stereotypeing will drop off too with the realisation that these people were Muslim, they weren't extremists, they were just going about their daily lives harming no one - in New Zealand.

I don’t believe he was genuinely racist. He quoted trite internet memes and his radical views seem to be phoned in.

It all just appears like he had nothing to say, and nothing to be too angry about, but his nihilism and unremarkable life lead him to do something so horrific for what? Just for the lolz and the social media viewers?! What the fuck?

I’m not discounting this. Never attribute to radical white nationalism that which can be explained by amoral Internet attentionwhore cuntery.

If we are going down the path of mass cyber-surveillance, I think this is a test of the genuine nature of such surveillance.

If as stated it's all been put together to stifle terrorism, then right now there's a trove of data streaming in thanks to social media. Plenty of which is generated by people who feel comfortable siding with the perpetrator in varying degrees.

Who are these people making these comments? Genuine locals? Genuine non-locals? Shills, bots? We're in a position to effectively understand the nature of the forces driving this phenomena. Are we just a pack of racist cunts when we get behind a screen? Or is something else at play?

Of course, the idea that we might be able to do this makes me feel kind of sick. If we are doing it, then it better be for the stated purpose.

NZ Police announce 10-years jail for knowingly possessing the video.

Also, websites without strong censorship controls (a la 4chan, 8chan, Liveleak) appear to be blocked for NZ IPs.

I agree with this move, but only if it's a temporary measure while emotions and rhetoric are white hot.

Aren't we already supposed to be in the era of mass surveillance? You know, Moment of Truth, Snowden and Greenwald, Five Eyes shit, all that stuff. Fat lot of good it seems to be doing. Or as Pablo said the other day, perhaps they only spy on brown people.

I'm kinda disgusted by people in youtube comments asking for links to the video. I can't imagine why anyone would want to watch it. Maybe they're teenagers who are still in that "I'm bulletproof" mindset? I mean, the guy shot 3 and 4 year olds. Who the fuck wants to see that? People who want to brag to their mates about how hardc0re they are? I imagine that it's not easy to forget the things you'd see in that video.

The only problem I have with emotionally charged policy changes are just what civil liberties or personal freedoms we'll be happy to give away in the name of safety, but then see how many of those controls are relinquished once emotions calmed down a bit.
It's the new Godwin's law, but the aftermath of 9/11 brought in so many of those sorts of changes that over time became the new normal. Now when the "9/12" comes.. Where to from here?
