Is this the year we are rid of Winston?

Maybe Not http://www.odt.co.nz/election-2008/t...leave-his-mark

Wouldn't that suck, if Winston lost, NZ First didn't get the 5% but Ron Mark comes along and gets in.
Actually it would be funny if he did, but NZ first didn't get enough % and only got 1 person in.

I'm voting in Rimutaka and it's going to be interesting - the incumbent has departed (Paul Swain) so you've got two unknowns for Labour and National (Hipkins and Whiteside) and then Ron Mark.

Mark's advertising has been notable for the absence of anything to do with NZ First.

If he gets elected then Winny will amost certainly get in too. 2% of the vote is enough to get you two MPs if one wins his/her seat.

I do hope that we finally get rid of that scumbag though. Maybe he can find a new home as Brian Tamaki's right hand man. I equate them at about the same level in self-centredness and outright deceptiveness.

Might be too early to celebrate but it looks like the bitch is dead. I've never been happier for National to win an electorate seat.

I don't think Winston is going to win Tauranga, so NZF's only chance is Ron Mark (trailing by a good margin currently) or 5+% vote.

They are stuck at 4.3% with no seat won and almost 90% results in, so it's pretty much game over for NZ First and Winston Peters.

Peters just arrived at his HQ. I'm waiting for a concession speech but as was mentioned earlier in the day it's doubtful he'll roll over and die that easily.

Well all the inquiries might have cleared them but the people have delivered their verdict. Good riddance.

epic fail

What were Mark's results again? In third place with something like only a third of the votes of the winning candidate?

Amen.

Speaking of whatever his name is, I saw his defeat speech via the TVNZ stream so it was basically four flashing pixels. However those four flashing pixels and the warbling 8kb/s audio channel had me thinking...

was he pissed? Seriously, was he drunk?

yep - he couldn't shake his association with NZF.
"If" (for arguments sake only) Labour dropped their Rimutaka canditade and Ron won (though maybe those Labour supporters would rather give their party vote to National rather than to NZF) NZF would have got their 5-6 seats creating a overhang & National/Act would not have had majority seats.

ACT gets 3.72% and 5 MPs
NZF gets 4.21% ... no MPs.

I don't care for winnies politics, but this is an undemocratic result. Everyone deserves representation, even racist old farts.

*edit* apparently there's an entire thread for this... >.>

No it wouldn't have created an overhand because they would have won less electorate seats than their list allocation. An overhand can only occur when you win more seats than your %age would have given.

Their 5-6 MPS would have reduced the number of mps in the other parties, proportionally, so probably 3 of nats, 2 of labours. for example.

When do special votes finish getting counted? I have this horrid vision of them somehow taking NZF over the 5% and Winston rising out of the grave looking to eat some brains.

Nah, special votes have in the past not favoured him. I doubt he would have conceeded if there was even the slightest chance that he'd hit 5% with them.
