NZ has dairy industry as well, dairy being commodities. Fonterra is 'best in the world' in the dairy sector.

IMO the optimists are not incorrect in saying that the demands from Asia will keep the economy going. But the debt level in Aus/NZ is so high because of the high house price. If Asian economies catch a cold for whatever reason and cut their spendings, us downstream feeding on their scraps in boom time will be the first major victims (luxuries like overseas travel probably will be the first to go, commodities demand may be firmer).

The economy may not be actually or perceived to be strong enough to service the debt piled up in boom time. Either way can trigger a downward spiral-of-death in Aus/NZ, like what happened in Ireland.

Bill English made the right noise about NZ not saving enough in the last budget (i.e. taking on too much debt). Then he ruined his economics credibility by announced the tax cuts.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that it's possible to grow grass and cows in places other than New Zealand.

NZ meat, dairy etc. has this 'aura' of clean, green superiority over others and hence fetches a premium overseas. Hey as long as others are willing to pay, the farmers are happy to sell. Food price in general has been rising rapidly in recent years anyway.

Edit: e.g. the whole 'angus' beef certification arguably is just a marketing campaign to charge people a lot more for slightly better quality meat.

It'd be nice to know what the law actually entails, or is that my folly for relying solely on online media?

Don't proponents of PPPs claim that an advantage of them is that risk is put onto the private sector? It will be interesting to see if Housing NZ is liable and how this will effect proposed future PPP's ie. contracts requiring the Govt. to top up investor revenue if things don't go to plan etc. Jump on the gravy train boys!

Haha. And this is yet another example of Chubby being a blind fucking idiot. If you take things literally, as Chubz always does, then the only viable conclusion is -- as you said -- Labour fucked those people over because the project was managed by Labour.

However, if one takes a more nuanced approach, allied with the knowledge of what people involved in leaky building litigation as claimants often do, a more benign picture (even for the useless fucks in Labour) will likely emerge. Housing NZ probably was involved with the development ONLY in the sense that it signed up to lease all those units/apartments on completion at X prices and guaranteed itself to meet those obligations, which in turn enabled the developer(s) to yell out "RENTAL GUARANTEE!" to fool idiots into paying over-inflated prices. Although no one can know this for a fact at this stage, it is unlikely that Housing NZ was involved in the design and building of the units/apartments. Only those involved in the design and building of residential housing owe the purchasers (and subsequent purchasers) a duty of care to ensure adequate workmanship.

So why have the owners sued Housing NZ? Simply put, people try to go after defendants who can pay and/or are perceived as less difficult. Local councils are insured by Riskpool, which in turn instruct Heaney & Co, which is well-known for bruising tactics and -- whatever I might think of them -- are certainly good at defending the councils. So if you act for the owners, you might advise them to try and bring the central government in as well and get some of the people at Crown Law who might be unfamiliar with leaky building cases into bit of a panic in the hope of some cheap gain. Or you might hope that there are lots of ignorant, stupid and even downright retarded people like Chubby who will jump on the bandwagon and place political pressure on the government to "do the right thing" or make a lot of noises and foolishly assign responsibility upon the present government. The latter might cause the government to settle or do something weak-kneed.

It's really as simple as that.

Chicken feed compared to the Labor tards in Australia giving $500 Million to Indonesia to build normal and islamic schools.

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/nat...-1225947062350

It makes me angry that this is continuing after the QLD floods and the Labor govt has imposed a flood levy tax on everyone and secondly because this is not being used to apply pressure to make people smuggling a crime and not a business in Indonesia.

Now I'm usually one to hate on the whole "but Labour did it too" defense that National trot out too much - but I'm not too sure how an inflatable waka pavilion is too different from a giant inflatable rugby ball pavilion, that Labour spent a million dollars on at the last world cup.

Pretty sure that is a Howard program that Labor has just continued. And all things considered I think helping to inoculate a generation of Indonesian kids against jihad craziness isn't such a dumb idea.

...iirc that was criticised as well.

Isn't there a dance at the beginning of every world cup rugby match involving NZ that promotes Maori anyway?

I have detailed files

When civilians took it upon themselves to chopper in supplies to quaketown, it was evident we were short of military pilots and craft to do the job. A strikeforce is one thing, but a presence and capability are another.

That said, the failed F-16 deal would have had the potential to put more Kiwis in the firing line when the Middle Eastern skirmishes developed, even if they ended up pootling around in Nato planes.

Australia - the stupid redneck country that keeps on giving

http://www.smh.com.au/national/stupi...407-1d4z3.html

So, there's a female cadet who was apparently filmed without her consent whilst having sex with another male cadet. The oh-so-sensitive armed forces of Australia decided to confront her with allegations of minor disciplinary offences at the same time as revealing to her that she might have been an unwitting pornstar. And that's not all: after this girl had the temerity to reveal to the media that she had been victimised by the allegedly unlawful filming, the nice blokes in charge of discipline at the army decided to make her plead to her disciplinary charges whilst she's still going through the ordeal. No, she's not being punished for speaking out. Really.

Now the Minister of Defence, in either an episode of genuine outrage or a well-timed PR stunt, has heavily criticised the army. So what does a bunch of likely ex-army hacks do? Pretend that there's something wrong with someone pointing out that mistreating alleged victims badly is a bad look: http://www.smh.com.au/national/stupi...407-1d4z3.html

Australia, a fucked up country that keeps on giving.
