So you're telling me that Barfoot & Thompson is selling away our birthright? If only Labour was in power. They would never let B&T have all these Asian agents.

Or to put a different spin on it, if NZ's biggest NZ real-estate asian market specialists, Barfoot & Thompson, are saying their figures are under 10% foreign-asian investment purchases, Labour still fucked up.

Edit: Oh, that was Law Reality - an asian market specialist - saying 10%

But... Uh...

So they're finding it surprising that the only NZ-based Mandarin-language real-estate web portal gets half it's traffic from overseas.

Given the percentage of the world's Intertube-savvy Mandarin-speaking population that are NZ based, I'm surprised it's that low.

Given the shonky stats Labour are peddling you would think at least 75% of the hits should be from China.

Fine, I will correct my statement: Rabid Nationals and fringe public figures looking to get their name out there.

What's your current stance on Labour's mistake being to focus on a single race?

I'm referencing the idea that Labour could have gotten this right if they didn't focus on the Chinese but rather foreign investment as a whole. Alas in 2013 they did just that and still people fell back to the racism trope. Pretty much undermines the racism angle entirely.

Labour's Rob Salmond keeps on digging.

After I published Labour's method online, Keith Ng, Tze Ming Mok, and Chuan-Zheng Lee - all skilled analysts, all otherwise critical on this topic - agreed the name-based ethnicity analysis was statistically sound, robust, and accurate.
Keith Ng brings the pain:

Quote:
Hey Rob, don't put the words "statistically sound, robust, and accurate" into our mouths to describe your work.

You asked whether I was willing to give a "more-or-less endorsement". I said the method was sound but the data wasn't, and we left it there. I would note that on the original blog I said of the data problems:

these problems only render it unscientific and utterly useless, which is the least of Labour's problems.

If you need clarification, let me restate it: The method is fine, the data is broken, and those problems render it unscientific and utterly useless. Not sound. Not robust. Not accurate.

...
Also, Sunday-Star Times: These claims Rob made about me are incorrect and defamatory. Please issue an correction in your next issue.

No. If you don't have a majority in the House all the time, the Governor General can't have confidence that you can pass legislation. Parliament gets dissolved, new election.

So, once again, if the Opposition dominates seats it ceases to be the Opposition.

The opposition need to dominate (on election day) the actual seats in Parliament in order to cease to cease be in opposition.

We're talking about the seats projected from a poll. Think of them as ghost seats. The opposition can dominate ghost seats, but can't sit in them.

Compared to the big one, definitely. Though I would think that both sides of parliament would value dominating projected seats. Especially the opposition as they've been the ones that have been dominated for quite a while - both real & ghost.

In the polls. The polls aren't worth squat this far away from election other than as a vague guide as to general public perception.

Who the fuck else would hold the majority of the opposition seats? Of course it's Labour. It always is.

No, it's just a headline to make the poll seem more interesting. It doesn't mean anything, because the government isn't determined by popular support between elections any more than the World Cup winner is determined by how strong each team is for 3 years and 9 months between each World Cup.

"If the election were held now..." is just fluff.

I disagree. I think that the results of political polls can sometimes influence voter behaviour eg bandwagon effect.
