And this, friends, is why a tablet running Windows 7 on a Core i5 processor might not be such a fantastic idea. Though the tablet promises up to seven hours of battery life, in our rundown test (movie looping, WiFi on) it managed just three hours and 33 minutes. Personally I'm completely vendor agnostic. I am however willing to state which current product I believe is best and I enjoy poking fun at some of the sad attempts at competition from manufacturers who have strayed from the path of success. To some naive / stupid / misguided people I may come across as being an Apple supporter. In fact I'm simply pointing out that Apple does produce the hands-down best products in most spaces in which it competes.

For me "best" includes the concept of "works out of the box"; this concept of best is not shared by some here and especially not those who need devices to not work in order for someone to want to employ them. There will thus always be some natural tension since the basis of measurement differs. The surface looks like a perfect example of this - it can be seen to not actually work in the demonstration and this is exactly what is triggering euphoria - the gravy train of end-user support is set to continue.

Summary of a Cringely article I just skimmed:

The Surface is no competition for the iPad. Microsoft isn't capable of making anything to compete with Apple. This bug-plagued unfinished product announcement without a price or availability date happened because Microsoft is desperate to look like it's not in third place behind next week's Google tablet announcement.

I think my point goes even beyond that somewhat. There's simply no sound reason for believing that Apple has any kind of intrinsic goodness. It commits just about as much of the usual corporate sins as, well, other corporates. Here it admits to lying to potential customers. Enjoy the products and support them if they are good and do great things for you. People should stop fawning over the company.
