Loaned out some of my party lights to a friend, not expecting anything other than thanks.

Said thanks was duly tendered, as well as a couple of passes to LightHouse Cinema in Petone as a nice bonus.

Would the Tongan incident matter if NZ had adopted a three strikes policy, or is this just more shit reporting trying to make something of his second NZ offense?

He's a tool and I laugh at him, but the Herald is a newspaper to which being discharged without conviction is the same as being convicted. Even though the two things are kinda, you know, different. In the sense that one is a conviction and the other isn't.

Afaik drink driving isn't even one of the offenses which the three strike law covers.

The Tongan offence wouldn't have counted. Under the three strikes law, all the offending involved have to be "serious offences" (as categorised under the statute) and must be NZ-based offences. I think the Herald was just taking the mickey out of him a bit, which is fine by me.

Once again, shame Garrett you fuckwit. LOLZ.

from the stories I've heard from friends who've been on juries, I've always felt like I'd be much safer leaving the decision on my fate up to a judge than a jury of 12 average people tbh

Lawyers in the criminal system love juries. Defence lawyers BS; the prosecutors can appeal to people's stupid prejudices. I'd like to see judge(s)-alone trials. And I am sick of proposals constantly being floated to given sex-related crimes/complainants special treatment. Do people who allegedly had their sight taken from them in a case of grievous bodily harm not have needs?

IMO people like Judges, JP's and Notary Public need to have more say than the average Joe.

Average Joe doesn't like the look of that Maori fulla with a record, and could easily see him beating his step son, regardless of any actual evidence.

I know it's all cool to avoid jury duty and pretend you're important and shit, but it's actually quite an interesting process and I'd recommend doing it at least once. You might learn something.

Did it once. Spent about 5 hours being shown transaction logs from various point of sale tills that were supposed to show evidence of someone slowly stealing cash (holyshitboring), before an abruptly called recess by the judge. Called back an hour later and the judge explained that the case had been labeled a mistrial and we wouldn't need to come back the next day to be reassigned.

Kinda similar to my experience - spent 3 days waiting to be selected for a trial, got selected for a trial, got selected on the jury, got challenged, trial ended up being delayed for 6 months anyway because the defense insisted on a translator being present. (Ethiopian immigrant domestic violence charges)

It was so fucking boring.

Except that it doesn't take ANY intelligence to not get involved in jury duty.

Sceptic in me says that the lesbians were actually planned by the radio station, as in the entire thing went the way it was suppose to because they realised/knew that an actual divorce on air would be too crass even for Jono.

If the sceptic in me is right, then they have pulled a hugely successful stunt.

I doubt they would have let the partner (amber) swear on the radio if it was a set up, she was dropping f-bombs like they were going out of fashion.

3:45pm, I've done all the work I can realistically get done without leaving the code-base in a mess before I get back to work on the 7th March. I've even done all the administrative bits (setting out of office, recording voice-mail, etc).

And I have beer.
