Is this the ransomware that looks like it was developed at the NSA?

The story goes that the NSA discovered it a while ago and (anecdotally) made use of it for some time without letting MS know about it (cue outrage and insistence that govt agencies should have to advise vendors of such vulnerabilities by law). Revealed by ShadowBrokers a couple of months back just after MS released patch for it (March 14th/15th released). Bad enough that MS have gone so far as to release patches for Win 2000 and XP to help stop it/slow it down. |

Sorry my ignorant, thought it was built at the NSA - as opposed to stockpiled against a rainy day there.

They're dropping like flies, man. For every legend that dies, 20 or so shitheads should die just to balance it out. Eg, Assad, Trump, O'Reilly. Chad Kroeger.

I might have it wrong, but didn't NSA discover the bug (EternalBlue), and kept/used it, then ShadowBrokers (ie Russia) obtained it in the NSA breach, MS rapidly patched it (although the timing is interesting - the XP patch was supposedly ready to go back in Jan/Feb - possibly due to so many ATMs still using embedded XP??). ShadowBrokers released it (and up popped a devkit) and someone - perhaps even Korea - weaponised it to ransomware. Last edited by StN : 20th May 2017 at 09:47. |

AMD v Intel.. Where are we at these days? And if Intel, is it i7 or bust, or is i5 actually decent for gaming?

imho, I7 isn't worth the extra $$.
Get an I5, and put the leftover $ into a better GPU.

I got a i7 7700k which I'm running at 4.8mhz under air cooling and its fine.
But the Ryzen chips are pretty good bang for your buck, as long as your playing at 1440p, they seem to be a bit lack luster at 1080p for some reason. |

I think mobile communications services need to have some kind of emergency fall back mode that keeps services up during an incident where many people are desperately trying to make contact at once.
Sacrifice some aspect of the service to ensure that some kind of message can be sent/received by everyone trying to communicate.

What, like extra emergency bandwidth?

I doubt bandwidth would be the main limitation, particularly if messages could be limited to basic text.
My guess is that managing the large volume of connections would be the main limitation.

A thousand people all texting "holy shit" to a contact or group takes up no bandwidth.
A thousand people all tweeting "holy shit" at once takes takes up no bandwidth. A thousand people all posting Instagram Stories of live video with their voices shouting "holy shit" at once and you in a world of pain. |

I know it's an empathetic bias due to me more easily culturally identifying with the victims (ie being a 'westerner' with school age kids) . . . but shit that hit me in the feels.

As with all networky things they are provisioned to handle a certain percentage of the users doing things at the same time but not all of the users doing something at the same time.
You'll have to pay more (somehow) if you want that. |

VIG is seven now, going on eight. The biggest event in her social life to date was being invited earlier this year to attend a concert by Aussie popstar Jessica Mauboy with the older sisters of one of MHG's schoolmates. I'm picturing kids having their first Big Girl Adventure out at a concert, and fuuuuuck.

There is no Marybank in Auckland. There is in Nelson, which is also postcode 7010, but Cummins St is not in Marybank, and there is no 168 Cummins St. No roads in Marybank go up to number 168. Neither Software city, nor "Alex Bengi" is registered with the companies office in any manner. Google brings up no Alex Bengi's in NZ. So to answer your question, nah. |
