'Incident' delays launch of James Webb Space Telescope

Still scheduled for launch this month. So many people must be living in anxiety over its launch and deployment. I am!

Very cool!

Now we just need to develop AI to successfully navigate the cosmos, defeat that AI, discover spice, and we're there!

The James Webb telescope is up:
https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/world/458...storic-mission

Now it's four weeks of holding our breath.

Here's a breakdown of what's next by Hank Green.

I’ve been holding my breath on this one for so long. If it fails I’ll be crushed. I almost don’t want to think about it. But it’s off-planet now and I’m drunk and celebrating.

Nasa has this up for tracking the progress of the deployment and insertion of the James Webb:

...because the Movie thread wasn't the right place.

Marcus House's rocket year in review.

My favourite would be at 21:22 when Astra, with a five engine rocket giving a 1.25 thrust to weight ratio, fails an engine just after lift off. The maths works out - with only 4 out of 5 engines working, you get a reduced ratio of 1:1 until enough fuel mass has burnt off - so it just wanders off sideways.

Every time I read more info about Webb it seems less and less possible that the crazy design and plan could ever work.

The more I read about it, the more I think $10b was a bargain.

Looks like it's going to have a long life, too:

Quote:
NASA's Mission Systems Engineer for the Webb telescope, Mike Menzel, said the agency had completed its analysis of how much "extra" fuel remained on board the telescope. Roughly speaking, Menzel said, Webb has enough propellant on board for 20 years of life.

This will be only one way that the AI to come will have our number. It's gonna be one helluva roll of the dice.

This is what gives me chills:

Glaciers continue to shrink this year, says NIWA

Quote:
"What we’re seeing is a clear retreat, which is no doubt thanks to climate change. In a decade, we predict that many of our beloved and important glaciers will be gone. This will have far reaching impacts, such as altering our beautiful landscape, affecting the livelihoods of people who rely on these natural wonders for tourism, and flow on effects from decreased meltwater during periods of drought. It also emphasises the urgency of slowing climate change because the impacts are going to become increasingly costly and hard to avoid," says Dr Lorrey.
The loss of glaciers is pretty much: "You know all that terrible shit we predicted was coming? Here it comes."

Fully paralysed man asks doctors for a beer after being given brain implant to communicate

Scientists say they successfully gave a fully paralysed man a brain implant that allowed him to control a keyboard with his mind.

And one of his first requests was to ask the doctors looking after him for a beer.

The 36-year-old German man also asked for metal band Tool's music to be played really loud to him, requested goulash and sweet pea soups, and asked his four-year-old son to watch a Disney film with him.

The problem with all these articles that 'say see this, it's going to cause a problem in the future', is it reinforces and normalises a public perception that this is something we have to deal with in the future.

This is the calm before the storm. We're not living it until there are mass sterilisation events and we're facing the massive swell of migration that results.

Look at a map of the world. All the bits that are mostly useless because they're usually covered in snow are about to become very very useful. The people that control the usually covered in snow bits are about to become very wealthy, or very invaded.

There is an incredible amount of land that is currently largely uninhabited due to the climate being too cold. As that shifts, we'll see massive investment in unheard of areas. It'd probably take a century or two, but Siberia and Canada could see a lot of growth.

As that Goldilocks zone shifts though, how quickly do you think we'll see the equatorial population recede due to the issues that will arise there? Or will technology and infrastructure investment outstrip climate impact for the most part, and it'll all be Dubai 2.0, for the wealthy at least.

Century or two? I'm not sure about other parts of the world, but I have worked with some very smart people in northern Canada who inform me that the landgrab started there twenty years ago.

Once you get your head around Universal expansion, it makes sense that the star in question is further away than the travel time of almost twice the age of the Universe, but does beg the question, why don't they state this is where it was seen, rather than the star is.
